What could possibly prevent 9-9-9 from becoming 12-12-12, then 16-16-16 as congress gets to tool with it over the years?

Art, how do you prevent the 9-9-9 from turning into 27-27-27?

I never liked huntsman but I lost some respect for Ms bachman with the upside down 999. Many who support Cain are God fearing country loving people. To bring up 666 against Cain was really ugly.

Cain’s 9-9-9 Plan Gets a Closer Look
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2791905/posts

Kevin Hassett, an economist and senior fellow at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, praised Cain’s plan as moving toward a flat tax.

“If someone’s going to attack the 9-9-9 plan I would say they should be careful because you are talking about the Republican holy grail,” Hassett said,

The plan, Hassett said, hews to the conservative orthodoxy of “taxing consumption rather than success.”

Cain is so far my preferred alternative. That said, I want you to envision the IRS monitoring every transaction to get its cut, including every drug deal, or every instance of barter. They would want agents everywhere and collecting it might well justify chipping. In fact, that Perry hasn't latched onto this shows how stupid he and his campaign really are. I am flagging the Perry worshipers so that they can force the issue at the top.

So, as much as I like consumption taxes in principle, this is one proposal where the devil is truly in the details and Mr. Cain should be very clear about what he proposes to make this both workable, just, and minimally intrusive.

The funny thing is I last saw Art Laffer at an event where Perry spoke - sponsored by the TPPF (Texas Public Policy Foundation). Their Pres. & CEO used to work for Perry.

TPPF recently installed Art Laffer as a Sr. Fellow.

The elimination of the home mortgage deduction would destroy what's left of the housing market in America for a generation.

I honestly can think of nothing worse that could be done to worsen the housing crisis.

Yikes! It’s just an idea and a more coherent one than anything from any of the other candidates. Even if Cain wins, this goes nowhere unless Congress creates the legislation and passes it. Odds of something as simple as 9-9-9 coming out of Congress is between slim and none.

The “they’ll just raise it” argument against the 9-9-9 plan is a non-starter. You can say the same thing of any tax. My biggest problem with the plan is the federal sales tax— digging deep into the main revenue source of state and local governments. It’ll kill off that revenue.

I still like Cain. The 9-9-9 plan doesn’t have a prayer of passing Congress, so I can still safely support him if I need to.

Put that tax on services as well, since this is supposed to be “Service Economy”. That means everything from lawyers fees and stock transactions to tanning salons and dog grooming boutiques. Maybe it would go down to 6-6-6. :-)

Art Laffer was a great Reaganite. I haven't paid much attention to Laffer or taken him seriously since he told the world he voted for Bill Clinton, TWICE!

Cain is starting to look like a Perot-clone v.2011.

Cain's 999 tax plan is nothing more than a gimmick. It expands the federal tax system by adding a national sales tax to the mix. Conservatives don't want more tax options that liberals could use as a tool of social engineering and class warfare. No thanks.

Well that thread got hi-jacked pretty quickly. I’m not sure there was even a single post that dealt with the subject of the article: Art Laffer—the father of supply side economics, the economist that designed Ronald Reagan’s economic plan that pulled us out of the Jimmy Carter recession and set us on the path of 20 years of economic prosperity—just endorsed...Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 plan.

This thread should probably be reposted, since it got hi-jacked.

My sense is that any kind of tax reform will be like turning over a rock.

Do we really expect politicians and special interests to just merrily go along without a tooth-and-nail fight? Government interests will try to kill this at every opportunity.

If a spotlight is shined on the depth of institutionalized government handouts and special interest favoritism the government will not come out looking good at all.

Large corporations lobby for the government to have more power, and in return the government enacts laws and regulations favorable to large corporations. Why is all or most of the focus on "evil capitalists?"

The Occupiers are yelling at the wrong people.

"Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 plan would be a vast improvement over the current tax system and a boon to the U.S. economy," Laffer told HUMAN EVENTS in a statement. "The goal of supply-side tax reform is always a broadening of the tax base and lowering of marginal tax rates."

Added Laffer: "Mr. Cain’s plan is simple, transparent, neutral with respect to capital and labor, and savings and consumption, and also greatly decreases the hidden costs of tax compliance. There is no doubt that economic growth would surge upon implementation of 9-9-9."
