First lady: I took Bo to Petco and no one recognized me (Video at link)

Michelle Obama tells TODAY she and her family sneak out 'as much as possible'

She is not the first inhabitant of the White House to hide her famous face behind a baseball cap and sunglasses, but Michelle Obama may be the most audacious shopper to ever inhabit 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

First lady Michelle Obama — who practically sailed through a Virginia Target without a second glance, and admits to sneaking out "as much as possible" — told TODAY’s Al Roker that she and first dog Bo once visited a major pet store without being recognized by a single person. Image: The First Lady Meets With Members Of The US Women's National Soccer Team Getty Images file Michelle Obama walks Bo while hosting a "Let's Move" soccer clinic on the south lawn of the White House, on October 6, 2011.

"I actually took Bo to Petco," the first lady told a bemused Roker.

"The cashier asked me, 'Oh, what kind of dog is that?' I said, 'A Portuguese water dog.' He didn't recognize us because he didn't expect that we would be in Petco."

Although Mrs. Obama said the cashier eventually realized who she was from her credit card, the trip, like others she’s reportedly taken while in the White House, revealed just how simple it was to quickly slip into and out of a store if no one was expecting you.

=snip=

"People realize and it's amazing how people don't recognize you. They don't expect to see me at Starbucks or at Chipotle."

The first lady told Roker that although she misses the ability to shop and travel as she likes, the clandestine sprees offer a sense of normalcy for a family bearing the weight of the free world.

What a repulsive wookie is this Moochhell!

The credit card she used was either 'US Taxpayers' or 'China.'

Au contraire! I expect to see you at Chipotle.

However the rest of the free world will have to wait until January 20, 2013 to regain a sense of normalcy!

I expect her at Olive Garden taking down US flags and checking sodium content while eating 600 bread sticks.

Yeah right! And I guess the dozens of secret service agents. The fact the street was shut down in front of the store and the caravan of vehicles didn’t tip anybody off.

Jeez...I’m surprised she didn’t go there for some Wookie-Oats and a feed bag...this story is a bunch of put-up crap. Unless, it was Bo going there for a pooper scooper for the First Wookie....

Was she unrecognised or were people just ignoring her.

I would go the other way if I saw her in Walmarts dressed in her usual clown outfit.

I’m old. I’d have asked her if she was gonna use her America EBT card to pay for that stuff.

I can actually believe that few recognized her, a lot of people don’t like her.

Most likely, some did recognize her, but the snarl on her mug kept them away. She can stop clocks with that glare.

I can’t believe no one recognized that dog though...

I think they did recognize the two dogs running loose in the store. One was in the biscuit bin.

Sure she did - not unless the Secret Service has a very incognito security detail.

"People realize and it's amazing how people don't recognize you. They don't expect to see me at Starbucks or at Chipotle."

They do see you, but they don't care that you're at Starbucks or at Chipotle...they've got more important things to do, like get on with their lives.

Either that, or they don't want YOU to recognize THEM and ask them why they're eating at Starbucks or at Chipotle, instead of the harvest from their environmentally-friendly Victory Garden.
