Suttle to Iowa: Build I-680 higher

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle wants Iowa to consider raising the elevation of Interstate 680 just east of Omaha to avoid the type of flood damage that struck the roadway this year.

He also asked the Iowa Transportation Commission to consider doing the same for parts of flood-affected Interstate 29.

The mayor addressed a commission meeting Tuesday at the Hilton Garden Inn in Council Bluffs.

Suttle said western Iowa relies on Eppley Airfield in Omaha, just as Omaha relies on the Interstate system in Iowa.

one wouuld think that a berm would be cheaper... kinda reminds me ot a government report some years ago that recommended NARROWING several of the local streets because other streets weren’t as wide...or one that mandates replacing all uppercase street signes with mixed case ones.. oh wait

I live and work in Omaha. I now understand why Suttle isn’t building roads anymore. Too bad he thought being mayor was a better idea. Besides he really missed the boat on this one, the problem isn’t the Interstate elevation, it’s the cars. /s

Not a civil engineer, but building I-680 higher over fundementally soggy, soft, prone-to-flooding ground next to Big MO will help because... ??

We build long causeways over water in many places.

It is not a limit of civil engineering, just a decision of how many dollars to spend.

Understood. So in other words, build a very expensive elevated highway over otherwise dry Midwestern farmland in preparation for seasonal flooding.

Shovel ready...

Keep in mind, this isn't just to prevent temporary road blockage. I-680 was greatly damaged during the flooding. The roadway was not properly designed for the location.

Suttle is a democrat through and through and wants Iowa to go along with this scheme because it will mean union jobs for his union buddies; for the same reason as he is pushing for the worthless “jobs” bill. I’m glad I live in Bellevue and not Omaha.

Agreed. I assume anything Suttle wants to do with our money (or someone else’s) has ulterior motives that are unrelated to the best interests of the public/taxpayers.

Heading to Omaha next week. Which bridges will let me cross the river? The Iowa DOT website seems to indicate that most of I-29 is now open.

Even if I stay in Council Bluffs, I still need my Brother Sebastian's Steakhouse fix!

Well, there are people in cars and trucks traveling across the country who would prefer not to wait for the water to subside. It IS an interstate.

If you eat at ANY Omaha Food Establishment the YOU WILL be paying “Suttle’s Omaha Resturant” TAX! Therefore I NEVER eat at ANY Omaha Resturant(Pottco, Iowa/ Sarpy, Cass or Oroe County, NE ONLY)!

There are places that do need to be raised. But the bigger issue is the crazy rules the Corp of Engineers have to play by.

It will flood again next spring.
