HANOVER, N.H. (AP) -- Presidential challenger Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama of failing to lead in a time of economic peril but sounded less conservative than his Republican rivals in their debate Tuesday night, defending the 2008-2009 Wall Street bailout and declaring he could work with "good" Democrats.
Romney also gave one of his most spirited defenses of his health care initiative when he was Massachusetts governor, legislation that Obama has called a partial blueprint for his own national overhaul. By positioning himself closer to the political center on several points, Romney sought to underscore his claim that he can draw crucial independent voters in next year's general election.
His chief rival, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, seemed less sure-footed. He repeated his main talking points about free enterprise but did little to dent Romney.
Former pizza company executive Herman Cain, who has climbed in polls lately, got more air time than usual. He repeatedly touted his call for replacing the U.S. tax code with a 9 percent national sales tax and a 9 percent levy on personal and corporate income.

If he works so well with Rats then he is in the wrong primary.
Oh good...that’s exactly what we need. Sheesh!
I missed the first few minutes of the debate tonight. Did the Mormon thing come up?
Is Romney an oxymoron?
“His chief rival, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, seemed less sure-footed. He repeated his main talking points about free enterprise but did little to dent Romney. “
Good ole AP and their Obama butt-licking propaganda. Looks like the MSM fix is in and Romney is their man..
Romney IS a Democrat...
Ever heard the term “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing”????
Amazingly, there are Freepers on here that would vote for Romney just because he is supposed to be “better” than Obama.
Romneycare, anyone?
“working with Democrats” is code for caving to the demands of the Democrats. That is precisely what got us in this $h1+hole mess we are in.
Hey dummy. I don’t want to work with Democrats. I want to work-them-over, run them over, kick their asses, and in the end, destroy them.
There is no substitute for victory.
Yes, but can he work with Republicans?
Tonight mitt said obama was “well-meaning” that’s a quote. Just think of it!
Not shocking...since he IS a democrat!
None of these candidates will beat Obama, regardless what the MSM polls and pols say. This may be the last best opportunity ever. They look like great guns but none of them bring their bullets. Hope it gets better soon.
That is the major problem I have with Northeastern Republicans(RINO’s), they are so willing to work with Democrats and screw the Conservative base at the same time.
Chris Christie endorsed him today. Christie is more of an insider RINO than Romney. I’m glad everyone can see that now.
GAG!!
“I can work with Democrats”
Hey Clueless!!!
That is NOT a good thing!
Anybody can leave their values behind to cut a deal!
America needs somebody capable of STICKING TO THEIR CONSERVATIVE VALUES, to frame the policies America requires to prosper again.
I kept warning the posters on FreeRepublic (mostly Paulbots and Palinistas) that the attacks on Perry helped no one but Romney and that if Romney gets the nomination, they will have no one but themselves to blame.
I would rather have a candidate that would work OVER the democrats. “Work with” translated into democratspeak comes out sounding like “BENDOVER”.
