HANOVER, N.H. (AP) -- Presidential challenger Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama of failing to lead in a time of economic peril but sounded less conservative than his Republican rivals in their debate Tuesday night, defending the 2008-2009 Wall Street bailout and declaring he could work with "good" Democrats.
Romney also gave one of his most spirited defenses of his health care initiative when he was Massachusetts governor, legislation that Obama has called a partial blueprint for his own national overhaul. By positioning himself closer to the political center on several points, Romney sought to underscore his claim that he can draw crucial independent voters in next year's general election.
His chief rival, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, seemed less sure-footed. He repeated his main talking points about free enterprise but did little to dent Romney.
Former pizza company executive Herman Cain, who has climbed in polls lately, got more air time than usual. He repeatedly touted his call for replacing the U.S. tax code with a 9 percent national sales tax and a 9 percent levy on personal and corporate income.

Huntsman brought it up LOL. Nobody cares if Romney is Mormon, they care that he's a creep.
The big question I have is why McCain gets a constant pass from the MSM on why he was such a failure.
I thought that Perry did MUCH better and I thought that he got his point across on Romneycare. He forced Romney say that he would repeal Obamacare and then fix it. It sounded like Romney was saying he would give us a form of Romneycare.
“If he works so well with Rats then he is in the wrong primary.”
I have stated several times that Romney is in an unusual position to do much good. If he did the right thing and left the GOP for the Democrat party, it would be an improvement for BOTH parties!
That’s odd. Democrats can’t work with Republicans. When Republicans reach across the aisle, they get their arms chewed off by the donkeys.
It’s a one way street, going their way.
Nice. Essentially, Romney is tacitly admitting that a vote for him for President is a vote by proxy for Obama. So, if the GOP establishment has its way, and chooses Romney as the nominee for us, then the election for President on Nov. 6 will be a false choice; if you vote for President, you will necessarily be voting for Obama, either directly or by proxy.
More of that “reaching across the aisle” bull****. That’s the crap that got us into this mess to begin with. I want someone who isn’t afraid to work over the DemocRATS. They all need a good old fashioned @$$ whoopin’.
That is easy. Because he was a trojan horse. As I understand, the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance bill was supported by Soros when it was proposed and passed years ago. I believe Soros owned Obama AND McCain. I know McCain sacrificed a lot for this country in Vietnam, but I have lost every shred of respect I have ever had for the man.
The WH stated (just when the debate was starting) that Romneycare was the basis for Obamacare. They also stated that Romney advisers met 3 times with Obama advisers for planning.
Which is exactly the problem. We don’t want someone who works with the rats. We want someone who resists what they propose and rolls back what they have managed to implement.
Yep..if you can’t get Cain you’d be better off voting for Newt at this point if Romney is going to cross the aisle like that. I’m tire of that garbage. 100 years of progressives getting their way it’s time it stopped. And yes I know about Newt, please no flames.
Yes you did. Perry did okay tonight. It will keep him in the game. He is getting ready to lob TV ads against Romney, maybe Cain later, but Romney is main target. The GOP candidates lost sight as to who was the enemy. The GOP establishment is pushing Romney. Not who I want.
I think Perry mainly tried to keep from making mistakes tonight. He is not down and out yet.
Of course he can work with Democrats....HE IS ONE.
Romney is Obama’s brother from another mother...did I get that right?
Because he is completely and totally compromised. They own him. He gets to play senator and pretend he is a maverick , but when the media needs him for a quote to sway opinion in the lefts favor , he is right there.
What Perry did best tonight was attack Obama. No one else did much of that.
This man makes me want to vomit and crap at the same time.
Nominate this democrat trash, GOP, and this vote stays home.
Don’t really care what the consequences are, only one way this stupid country is gonna learn, and that is the HARD WAY.
