Amish men refuse to pay fine, cite religious beliefs

GRAVES COUNTY, Ky. — Local Amish men say they aren't budging when it comes to state law.

Four of the men appeared in a Graves County courtroom Monday for refusing to pay fines for not displaying a reflective triangle on their buggies.

State law requires slow-moving vehicles to display the bright orange-red symbol.

In August, eight men, including the four in court Monday, spent time in jail for refusing to pay the fines.

Kentucky Administrative Regulations

•You MUST use a front light when riding at night or whenever it is darker than usual (i.e. when it is heavily overcast)

•You MUST use a red rear reflector or light on yourself or your bicycle whenever riding on a highway or shoulder (definitions).

•At night or when overcast, you MUST use a steady or flashing red rear light.

These are the same people that build an out building for their phone service. If it isn’t in the house, it is ok. There are Amish that hide television sets in their walls. I guess they think they are hiding from God AND the government. They already don’t pay taxes... Religious exemption.

If they use our roads, let them pay.
