A statue unveiled on Monday in Johnstown of the late John P. Murtha evoked vivid memories of the longtime congressman who in his lifetime encountered both criticism and praise for his twin devotions, national security and domestic economic development projects for his sprawling Western Pennsylvania constituency.
Rep. Mark Critz, the man who took Murtha's place in Congress, said in the wake of the devastating Johnstown flood of 1977, his former boss "picked up the (Johnstown) economy and stuck it on his shoulders."
One of his achievements, Critz said, were new water and sewer lines and other district-wide infrastructure improvements that totaled $2 billion.
Murtha, a Marine Corps combat veteran of the Vietnam War who grew up in Mt. Pleasant, served in Congress from 1974 until his death in February 2010. For much of that time, he either chaired or was the ranking member of the House panel that oversaw Defense spending

Johnstown is the Town that Pork Built.
And now that it’s benefactor has assumed room temperature, it is dying just as quickly. All the phony plastic banana defense jobs are going away. The hockey team left two years ago. And his successor Mark Critz is likely to be redistricted out of his job soon.
I would not want to have to be a dad trying to explain this statue to his child forty or fifty years from now. I guess people in Louisiana must have that experience with statues of Huey Long.

Got news for ya. Johnstown has been dead for a long time. It never really recovered from the recession of the late 70’s/early 80’s when unemployment was 15% in the area. The mills and mines closed and that was it.
Murtha’s monument is all around the area, with run down homes, empty businesses, roads full of potholes, and ever increasing meth labs, all in an area that was once vibrant and Johnstown was declared an All-American City in 1976.

Statue? What is it, a big trough full of slop?

The statue portrays him as being two hundred pounds slimmer that he was.

Normally I refrain from speaking ill of the dead, but I am glad that Murtha, a corrupt POS traitor , is dead and gone.

He noted Murtha was one of the few people in Washington who consistently sought out the views of frontline troops. As a result, Jones said, his opinions were particularly well-informed. Really? Like this when he called Marines cold blooded killers months before the investigation was even completed?

What a joke. That picture makes that dead fat POS traitor look like one of our Founding Fathers. NOTHING could be further from the truth.
