Yup... the PURPOSE of the primary season is for the party’s candidates to distinguish themselves from one another. In other words: what does this candidate bring to the table that the other candidates don’t bring (or don’t bring well)?
It is ABSOLUTELY a legitimate question to ask why Cain is focusing sustained fire on #3, while virtually ignoring #1 (where Romney is in most polls).
Both Romney and Perry are the same old GOP politics as usual Establishment politicians. All this suppose verbal combat at the debates is just Kabuki theater for the masses.
What does Romney need? Someone to build a bridge to the social conservatives in GOP Establishment like Palin did for McCain in 2008. Who is the darling cult of personality Bush jr idol of the social conservatives?
Rick Perry.
What does Perry need but a chance to perform on the National stage and be "President in waiting" so he can be President in fact 8 years from now.
It is a political Establishment marriage of the GOPbots dreams. It the equivalent of putting Bush and McCain on the same ticket. Mass campaign money plus candidates who are on the "correct" side of every one of the crony capitalist party Establishment positions.
Cain has nothing to offer any of the Establishment Candidates. He build no bridges, brings no money and totally over shadows any of them on the intellectual field.
Cain would not be anyone choice for VP. Perry will be.
Well, I'll take a shot at it. I knew little or nothing about Perry until he declared. I don't think I'd ever heard the man speak before he entered the race. I knw Rick Perry was the governor of Texas, but that's about it.
After he declared, my wife and I were watching him speak, and he seemed (to us) rather artificial and kind of weird. Like a Presidential candidate out of central casting. Good looking, tan, glad handing, but not very bright or articulate, and I couldn't quite figure how he managed to rise as high as he has. He didn't seem to have an aura of achievement around him. Almost like the stereotype (not the reality) of Dubya.
For all Romney's many political flaws, the guy has been a successful businessman and is clearly very bright. He achieved, and not in government. Though I can't look at him without thinking of Wink Martindale, the old gameshow host.
I think Cain just looks at Perry and doesn't see anything of substance.

Why does he need to attack Romney? He’s catapulted from bottom to top by just sticking to his own message.
Romney has 4 YEARS of name recognition and front-page news behind him. The fact that an unknown like Cain is now tied with Romney for the lead shows that Cain’s message works. He approach works. No need to change it up when everything is firing on all cylinders.

Bank that. It is NOT okay that Cain backs a socialist responsible for originating socialized health care in the US. For the very reason you suggest, Cain is smart and sees how this is going down. Cain all palled up with a socialist is simply not okay, and tag teaming with that socialist against Rick Perry telegraphs who the real threat to Romney is. Rick Perry.

I’m no Perry fan, but to be truthful, in Texas the owners offarms, ranches etc. lease out the hunting rights on their property to others. The property in question is not owned by the Perry family, but the hunting rights were leased by the Perrys. What right would they have to deface anothers property? Exactly none!
Besides the Perrys were Democrats back then and probably didn’t see it as a problem. Such things are problems only if you are a Republican. Perry is a RINO so he’s straddling the fence here on knowing exactly what to do.
Cain had this book tour scheduled long before he surged. Why would you have a problem with a man honoring his commitments?
Perry has a lot of campaign money, but he's dropping. I fail to see how money should be the deciding factor.
Perry would never be a VP over a governor of a huge state like Texas. More power as governor, and Perry is the only one that could beat Obama anyway — I don’t care what the polls say about Romney’s ability. An Obama/Clinton ticket will beat anything Romney/? could bring to the table.

I have no problem with Cain. While I do not support his 999 plan because I oppose a new consumption tax, I think Cain is mostly a terrific conservative. Cain has debated well, and gets better and better dealing with the media. Additionally, Cain seems to intellectually get conservatism and is actually able to explain WHY conservative governance works.
Just the same, political analysts and insiders know exactly what is playing out. Romney's strategy here is completely transparent. Republican primary voters will go with the safer choice in the end. Once Perry is gone, there is no one remaining with the money and campaign infrastructure to challenge Romney. If Mitt is left with only Cain to compete with, his vastly superior cash advantage will be used to remind people that Cain is a political novice who hasn't won a single election and that America can't take a chance on someone who has not been tested politically.
And Mitt's team obviously figures they get a bonus out of this. By cozying up and speaking highly of Cain, they can use him to both knock Perry out and improve Romney's standing with conservatives by appearing to be supportive of and largely in agreement with the grass roots hero.
You, me, and even JR, agree that Romney is the white Obama.
