As much as I enjoy Dr. Sowell's articles, I've always disliked the term "reverse racism". To me, regardless of the color of the players involved, racism is racism, period. Glad I read the coments first. Bingo! Racism is racism. No such thing as reverse racism but I understand what the guy means. Heard he's real smart too. Well he messed up on the title but I agree with him.

Well he messed up on the title but I agree with him. I don't know that I'd say he messed up on the title since the term "reverse racism" has been commonly used for quite some time. I just have a particular dislike for it. (Describing it as reverse seems to be a way for the left to minimize the fact that it's still racist.)

It’s a real shame that a man with so much intelligence and common sense would stoop to using a term such as “reverse racism.” You must be profoundly disappointed.

Well, maybe that idea is just around too much , either way I do not like the title nor the words together" reverse discrimination." Even so I did enjoy what he wrote and do remember having read some of his other works. I think most folks have seen or felt or been a part of racism and if they haven't well they live very blind lives. I just wish what he wrote would take effec before this Holder/Obama payback crapola takes too many in and creates even more problems in society and especially in the judicial system. I think anyone can see what obama did to the supreme court. Sadly, I don't think that can be reversed!

Yet the term has entered the lexicon and is probably here to stay. Like "white slavery," as if non-white slavery were a standard with few exceptions, instead of just one piece of the general pattern of enslavement covering every period of history and every population group.

I understand your point of view, but his use of the term is appropriate, since it lays the groundwork in a way that a lot of people (who may not be as discriminating as you are...and I don’t mean that in a bad way...:) will relate to.
I think it is simply efficient writing for him. There is nobody anywhere of any color who sees the term “reverse racism” and doesn’t understand exactly what it refers to.
I give Dr. Sowell a pass on this. In my opinion, he has earned the right to use that phrase as a form of shorthand for his readers.

I am currently listening to his book “Conquests and Cultures”, and he goes into great detail on that very subject. Funny how the most prolific slave merchants (over the longest period of time) have been Muslims, and how muslim countries were the last ones to ban it (and even still engage in it despite banning it for PR purposes)
They don’t have those facts in today’s textbooks in schools.

Thanks for the ping to another truly important message from Dr. Sowell. We’ll be getting that book just as soon as it’s available.

RL, I had my tongue in my cheek. I think it presumptuous to question Sowell’s language on this issue, not to mention a tad nit-picky.

I’ve coined the term “State Sanctioned Racism” — hope it catches on.
What people don’t realize is that policies like Affirmative Action are state sanctioned racism, which is worse than arbitrary/voluntary racism by individuals because there is an element of fascism in it (e.g. the gov’t forces it on people).

I have “Conquests and Cultures” on the shelf. There’s a standing reward for any child who finds a Thomas Sowell book I don’t already own at the library sale, used book store, or thrift store.
He covers the same ground in a section of “Black Rednecks and White Liberals,” too. One interesting point was that there is not a noticeable black population in the Moslem world, outside parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, in spite of the huge numbers of black slaves imported. They died, instead of (as it were) colonizing, as happened in the Americas.
