Some people are absolute vocabulary snobs though and would insist otherwise. I would tend to think that a good command of the vernacular in current/consistent use would be the most effective method of properly speaking to the larger portion of the populace.
Yes. Words change over time. An example would be the Elizabethan meaning of “Suffer” (meaning to allow) versus today’s meaning of the same word.
Of course there are technical and medical terms as well, that are always being updated to encompass our ever changing society.
American Colloquialisms are as much a part of our Heritage as our music and culture. Mr. Cain’s slight faux pas is nothing compared to the vile degeneration of language, music, and culture which is being foisted upon us all by the Media, Hollywood, and Academia.
I wondered why my ads on Craigs list were getting so few eyeballs this week. They’ve all gone to occupy wherever.
