He is the latest Tea Party favourite to burst through in the increasingly heated race for the Republican presidential nomination and see their poll numbers rocket them to frontrunner status.
However, unlike previous rightwing darlings such as Texas governor Rick Perry and Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann, wealthy businessman Herman Cain, 65, can claim to be cut from a very different sort of cloth from the average Republican candidate.
First, he is not actually a politician. Cain, whose CV includes being a radio show host, a navy ballistics expert, a Baptist minister and a Federal Reserve official, has never held elected office in his life. His most famous job was as chief executive of the fast-food firm Godfather's Pizza.
Yet none of that seemed to matter to the cheering crowds at the Values Voter Summit in a Washington DC hotel late last week. There was much to celebrate. A Zogby opinion poll had just boosted Cain into first place in the race, with 38% of the vote, compared with 18% for former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Perry trailed in third place with 12%. The study even showed Cain beating President Barack Obama in a match-up by 46% to 44%.

Agreed on all points. Cain is articulate (without a teleprompter no less). People are tired of politicians. Our form of Government was never intended to have life long politicians. It was meant to have people successful in the real world, to stand up and represent their families, their communities and their way of life. People who have been in government for all or most of their adult lives are nothing more than parasites who could not cut it in the real world. One way or another, that will soon draw to a close, people are tired of the political class who feel entitled to our money and sweetheart deals. It’s time that government stops “picking winners and losers.” (As Herman Cain has said).
Only moderately.
Exactly what is wrong with radical change in, let’s say... the tax structure? Only an IRS agent, CPA, or liberal could fault radical restructure of THAT.
“How much has he increased his donations lately? You guys have so much faith in his way of thinking”
Money follows the poll numbers. You seem to think that it’s the other way around and that’s a mistake.
He has already raised millions and now the donations will skyrocket.
So, you want more of the same?
Kewl! I bet Cain’s tombstone is going to be more impressive than that of Roland Burris!
hah hah!
Aw yes, the typically rude, abusive and excessively nasty response. (But you did illustrate my earlier point though.)
And he wants to tax tea--and everything else you buy. You can't make this stuff up!
Just to reiterate, according to Cain’s plan, the 9-9-9 plan is a a transition to the FairTax it is NOT the intended final tax system. I do not like the 9-9-9 plan, but I like Cain (he’s one of several I can support, declared or not), and know that he cares deeply for both freedom and his country. He’s not perfect, but that’s not required.
The best executives hire potential with experience.
“So those are the choices you want to ask us to make? A guy with no experience vs. Barack Obama”
No. Experience that counts is experience in the private sector. A guy with no experience would be someone like Perry who inherited a governorship and kept getting reelected simply by having an R next to his name in Texas. Cain has plenty of experience.
A radical change which doubles taxes for most people is a losing proposition for any candidate to run on. That's what's wrong with it. There is an election coming up in 2012 and I'd like to keep Obama from winning it. Raising the taxes on most people isn't going to accomplish that.
I’m a Sarah Palin supporter. When she decided not to run, I got on the internet and started looking at other candidates. Although he has never held public office, Herman Cain is not a newcomer to politics and has run for the Senate in NE in the 1990’s, POTUS in 2000 and for the Senate in GA in 2004. He also had a newpaper column and a radio show. Cain has a record out there before he began running for POTUS this time. If you’re going to vet Herman Cain, you need to dig deeper than his website.
[Money follows the poll numbers.]
If that were true, then Perry would not have set a recent near record for donations, (17 Million in one month) shortly after his campaign was supposedly finished, done, history, etc,,.
Cain still has no financial structure or clear plan for his campaign, which is still nearly broke. (fact)
I missed where you inspired us with your tax plan from on high. What was it again?
Apparently he is a minister.
Herman Cain: Im a Baptist preacher. A lot of people dont know that.
Im one of the Associate Ministers there because I was called to the ministry.
I have to ask this. If he is called of God to be a minister, why would he stoop to be a President? The one certainly overrides the other.
The last "preacher" that we had as President was Jimmah Cahtah.
I have some other “phobias” too. Like Marxistophobia, Entitlementophobia,Globalwarmingophobia, biggovernmentophobia, leftistpropagandaophobia and MSNBCophobia.
Well said, definitely worth remembering.
