Romney tells conservative voters that “poisonous language” doesn’t advance their cause

WASHINGTON - Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney told conservative and evangelical voters today that “poisonous language doesn’t advance our cause,” the day after a surrogate for another GOP presidential candidate described Mormonism as a cult.

“It’s never softened a single heart or changed a single mind,” Romney said. “The blessings of faith carry the responsibility of civil and respectful debate.”

Romney’s comments at the Values Voter Summit in Washington were aimed at a conservative radio commentator who immediately followed him on the program, according to a spokeswoman.

But the backdrop was a controversy from the previous day when a Texas pastor, Robert Jeffress, gave an interview in which he said that Mormonism was not a Christian faith and was a cult. He had made similar comments in the 2008 presidential election. As before, the comments immediately caused a stir.

Yesterday’s comments were notable because the pastor delivered the comments shortly after introducing another GOP presidential contender, Texas Governor Rick Perry, raising questions over whether Perry knew that his surrogate was about to attack his competitor’s religion.

Perry told a reporter in Iowa that he did not agree with Jeffress.

The same Cain that has left his old pal, Romney, to lock up key donors while he locks up his book sales at Barnes & Nobles?

Can you say "stalking horse"?

I sincerely hope that Rick Perry has the good sense and political savvy to decline to address the issue of any other candidate’s religious beliefs. Conservatives not in the political arena can ahndle disseminating the facts without the media being given a club with which to bludgeon all Republican candidates, namely Milt’s cultish religion.

Yes that is our duty.

BTW Ihad a school friend that was Mormon. she told me that they had to take their Tax returns to some kind of meeting with an elder, or whoever, then this person would tell them how much they OWED the Church. And it was mandatory. Do they still do that or have they stopped that practice.

I know we are suppose to tithe, but I have never heard of that kind of practice.

Apparently it’s a religious thing. they don’t have Mormon Chaplains. Since Mormons don’t have Priest or Ministers.

“Uh, oh. That isn’t going to go over well with the Mormon haters here. “

Name them all.
Show some statements that “hated mormons.”

That is new to me, but I am not surprised. I have friends who are Mormon. I never talk about our churches with them, but I do not change the way I think and talk about our blessed Lord when I am with them.

With everything that is coming at us without our kinowledge, I wonder if there will even be an election in 2012! It is all far worse than I thought! But we are to occupy until He returns. God knows what He is doing. At this poiint there is very little any of us can do, if anything, to change what is happening. Only God can do it, and He will not dessert us. Stay safe!

One challenges Social Security at his peril. Surely that later old compromiser Goldwater should have taught us that.

Perry was a Gore booster in 1988, not 2000.

The state of UT takes out 10 percent automatically unless the person signs a waiver that he is non-Mormon. I would think the church may enforce the 10-percent “rule.” They also compel two years of “missionary activity” at one’s expense.

I stand corrected.

In 1998 Gore was a liberal Democrat-ask anyone from Tennessee. It is my understanding that Perry hooked on to Gore for self-promotion.

That brings to mind the story Rush Limbaugh often tells about Perry coming uninvited to a fund raiser just to get his picture taking with Rush, again for political pontification.

I still can't figure out why Rush would want Perry, a RINO, for CIC.

Jeffress said today that Romney “is a good, moral family man, but that evangelical Christians ought to choose another evangelical “who embraces historic Christianity,’’ rather than Mitt Romney. He said that he had not consulted with the Perry campaign about his comments on Mormonism.

“This is not an issue of bigotry. It’s an issue of defining how important faith is in the election,’’ he said. “And this issue is not going away. It will continue to be a discussion up until November 2012.”

Here's where Jefress blows it. Not in the first statement, which, although not politically savvy for a general works for Evangelicals during a primary, nor his follow up stating he acted independently of Perry. It's the last statement.

It is totally inside baseball and spin to pretend it's not bigotry. If it remains a discussion point deep into next year Obama will be re-elected.

Wars of religion will turn off the voters. A lot of dumb things and contradictory opinions can be made during the primary. If it ends up in the general it will cost us the election.

One challenges Social Security at his peril.

And, one suggests imposing extra taxes on senior citizens at their own peril. That particular demographic likes to vote. ;)

I hate to say it but that ad has me wanting to support Perry, and vote against Romney.

I too see Social Security as an unconstitutional Scam. I think its a real tragity that so many generations have been forced to burn their hard earned money up in that poniz scheme.

Romney’s support for the criminal scam social security makes him a lot harder for me to support.

Give the people their money back.

Your quote intrigued me and I looked it up. Talk about propaganda. You act like a Leftist.

Here’s the quote in context:

Lucid Business Sense

Along the way, Mitt founded Bain Capital, a venture capital firm that now has assets of $40 billion. In evaluating whether to invest in a company, Romney would play devil’s advocate to flush out facts.

“If someone comes in the door and says, ‘Mitt, black is white,’ he’ll say, ‘Oh, no, black is black or black is red,’” Ann says. “He never takes anything at face value; he can argue any side of a question. And sometimes you think he’s like really believing his argument, but he’s not. He just flushes the whole thing out and figures out the whole picture.”

At the same time, Romney expects those around him to do their homework.

“If he’s in a meeting and someone doesn’t have the right data, hasn’t prepared well, they know that they’re in trouble,” Ann says. “I think he’s a bit intimidating that way, because he’s so bright he cuts through a lot very quickly. He thinks in hyper-speed, and he expects people to keep up with him, and sometimes they don’t.”

“One challenges Social Security at his peril. Surely that later old compromiser Goldwater should have taught us that.”

That may be so, but we do need to get rid of the Socialist(social) Security system. This system is a corrupt and dysfunctional scam who’s only product is create a goverment depended voting block from which votes are either bought with bribe or fear of loss of forced investment.

The prosperity and future of the republic depends upon the destruction of Social Security. It will either happen by going bankrupted or it will be privatized and abolished.

The only other option is to allow it to consume us as it destroys future generations and leads to our demographic and economic collapse. With the same the effective end of the united States.

This abomination MUST BE DESTROYED!

I'm glad you took the time to google it, it's very easy to do. The quote is interesting, and even though the segment I posted is out of context, it certainly describes what we have come to expect from Mitt Romney. It represents him to a T.

So you can say I act like a Leftist if you want, you can can say I lie if you want, none of that matters to me, my enemies are the progressive statists Mitt Romney and Obama, not you.
