Tale of Hub teacher’s job struggle stretches truth (Obama, You Lie!)

President Obama spun a work of creative nonfiction yesterday in his latest pitch for his jobs plan, fudging the facts of a Boston schoolteacher’s White House visit as he cast the man as a poster boy for the hot-button bill.

“I had a chance to meet a young man named Robert Baroz,” the president said at a midday news conference. “He’s got two decades of teaching experience. He’s got a master’s degree. He’s got an outstanding track record of helping his students make huge gains in reading and writing. In the last few years, he’s received three pink slips because of budget cuts. Why wouldn’t we want to pass a bill that puts somebody like Robert back in the classroom teaching our kids?”

Two problems: Obama never met Baroz. And Baroz remains happily employed.

It is technically true that Obama had a chance to meet Baroz. But the closest Baroz actually got to Obama was the front row of a Rose Garden press conference on the jobs bill in September, with a handful of other teachers. He later met with White House aides and Obama’s education chief, but never met the president.

Obama is what gets hatched from a big city political machine. In Illinois his constituents applauded and voted by rote. The news media protected and cultivated him. He could lie or tell the truth with the same result and lying makes more interesting oratory. After a while it's second nature. John Kerry is a bird of the same feather.

But he was unemployed. That he got rehired is not to erase that fact. Under the Union Subsidy Act...err, Stimulus 6...err, American Shovel-Ready Act, he wouldn’t have to wait more than 15 minutes before getting another job (digging and refilling holes).

Agreed it has been many years since I was a public school teacher (50’s,60’s) but my contract was always for one year and automatically extended year by year. However, one could say I was laid off and rehired each year. Incidentally I initially received $300 p/mo for 9 months per year. Of course, prevailing wages then were around $1.50 p/hr. We made out fine as started to fill the house with kids. They are remembered by all of us as happy times.
