Now that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has announced he will not seek the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, all of the Republican donors, elected officials, and party activists pining for a savior to jump into the race must face the reality that the field is set. They need to channel Stephen Stills: If you cant be with the one you love, love the one youre with.
No doubt the fundraisers for Mitt Romney and Rick Perry are tying up the phone lines into New Yorks financial district, wooing donors who had either been holding out for Christie or had used him as an excuse to remain on the sidelines.
Both the Perry and Romney camps can argue that the Republicans who would have supported Christie will now gravitate toward their candidate. Perry backers can point to Christies brash, in-your-face style and say that the Texan is more temperamentally and stylistically similar. In that sense, its true, Romney and Christie could hardly be more different. But ideologically, Romney might actually be a closer match. Its hard to imagine Perry mimicking Christies support for the ban on assault rifles and current gun laws or saying, as Christie did when he was running for governor, that he is anti-abortion, but would not force that down peoples throats. The truth may well be that social and cultural issues arent particularly important to either Christie or Romney.
In the end, its a good bet that neither Romney nor Perry will inherit an appreciable number of supporters; its the donors who wanted Christie who are now in play. With the fourth quarter just getting started, it will take a while to ascertain who wins the donor primary.

The dead guy ? It’s La Raza Rick to win ? Um, what ? The open borders RINO buffoon and mumble-mouthed career politician who is in total freefall ? Cain has Palin’s supporters and a good chunk of La Raza Rick’s former supporters who wised up. Time to get on board the Cain Train !
I think so. He does have to improve in this area.
Well you have a good point. But again those who take part in the straw polls are more than likely the same ones who attended/watched the debates. I just think Gov. Perry will come out of this better than many expect.
My state, Virginia, is a swing state. We have a fantasitc Governor, Bob McDonnell who is working hard to turn Virginia back to the red.
I’m partial. I would love to see him as the VP. They would be the team of JOBS Governors.
I would love to see that too. But would you want to lose your Governor? Wolfcreek thinks it could be your governor.
Fox News was down on Perry after that debate day and night almost non stop. The did it for several days until their poll came out showing he had fallen back.
At the same time they were pushing Cain knowing full well he cant be a serious contender because of the money.
I’m begining to think they want Romney to be the nominee. That way we get Obama again and their ratings continue.
Those so called debates were not actually debates. In most of the cases, it was simply one attack after another. There have been attacks by media one after another too. Perry did not articulate his positions well, but I believe he will do better on the rest of them. However, he is still being attacked by liberal media who are terrified of what he would do to Obama. I will not vote for Romney, and I don’t think Cain has staying power. Guess we will see.
Oh, yeah, that would be an excellent team!
Yes, but he is the man. I want to see move up and know he would work well with Gov. Perry. I also like to see Governors as candidates rather than lawmakers.
We also have Cuccinelli as our Attorney General and he is dynamite and would be a good governor.
Perry never said this stuff. It doesn’t even sound like him. If Liz said it, well she makes up all kinds of stuff.
Telling lies again I see Liz.
Yes, I love Cuccinelli...I get his Cuccinelli Compass.
I noticed that too. I wondered why as well. I think Cain is carrying the water for Romney too.
Here is why the Perry camp is in trouble. It Fox News, It’s Cain, It’s Romeny it’s EVERYONE else fault Perry is screwing up.
Winning campains know how to be flexible and responsive. To quickly response to a tough changing campaign environment. The Perry camp would rather blame everyone else then admit their candidate is clumsy, inarticulate and not the least ready to face a National Campaign.
Considering Perry’s history in TX, I can pretty well promise that he would choose a conservative hispanic or black American running mate. Col. West would possibly be one choice, Rubio would be a dream candidate, but I don’t think he is a natural born citizen. There are a lot to choose from in several swing states.
My remarks about Fox News is hurting Perry’s campaign? His campaign listens to little ole me?
Doubt it.
Rubio has already said he will not accept an offer as VP. Boy, I am glad of that...you’re right he isn’t a NBC. I would love Congressman [Lt.Col.] West, but I believe he has said he it isn’t the right timing for him. I don’t believe he would accept an offer.
Yes, we have all noticed that about Cain. I wonder if he will continue his attacks against Perry while none on Romeny. I guess we will soon see.
Here Dr. Jack Wheeler says today: Charlie Cook is the most respected political prognosticator in the country, Charlie Cook, wrote today (10/07) that “It’s Perry’s To Win.” As for Cain, Charlie says, “without the apparatus, money, or expertise in actually winning a party’s nomination, it’s doubtful that he can go very far.”
Your comment brings up an interesting point. During the 2008 presidential debates, we were suspecting Zer0 was wearing an earpiece. I wouldn't be surprised if he and an inner ear adviser giving him debate answers through a wireless ear piece. His "Err. Ahh. Ummmm. Ahh." pauses between words will give him the opportunity to listen to his inner ear adviser for that perfect debate answer.
