In a shock development Thursday evening, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) triggered a rarely-used procedural option informally called the nuclear option to change the Senate rules.
The surprise move stunned Republicans, who did not expect Reid to bring heavy artillery to what had appeared to have been a hum-drum legislative knife fight.
Reid appealed a ruling from the chair that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) does not need consent to force a vote on a motion to suspend the rules to consider an amendment after cloture has already been approved.
The maneuver is highly arcane but momentous. If a simple majority of the Senate votes to uphold Reids appeal, the Senates rules will have been changed by the unilateral action of one party.
Republicans had considered using this maneuver, dubbed the nuclear option in 2005, to change Senate rules to prohibit the filibuster of judicial nominees. Democrats decried the plan and the crisis was resolved by a bipartisan agreement forged by 14 rank-and-file senators known as the Gang of 14.
Any hints about what Levin and DeMint say will be much appreciated. I want to know the import of this but can only sit down for a few minutes here and there and need simple explanations...
what the heck?
If only that were true. Usually Rs are too “nice” or too busy “reaching across the aisle” and don’t stand up to the dims no matter what. Then the Rs are oh so surprised when the dims walk all over them every chance they get. We really need to elect conservatives that are tough enough to stand toe to toe with the dims and give them a dose of their medicine.
Memo to:
"Let's Get Along" Republicans:
Wake Up and smell the COFFEE!!
Truly,
Those of us who realize Hussein and his allies HATE OUR REPUBLIC.
Not so sure the bill is pointless, but this entire thing is confusing because the full article this thread is based on never mentions the China bill, but only mentions maneuvering by the Republicans to bring Obama’s so-called jobs bill to a vote.
It was John McCain who formed the Gang of 14 to find a "compromise" that prevented the Republicans from exercising the "nuclear" parliamantary process to force the rule change, but apparently, the Democrats filed the plan away for their own future use against weak Republicans.

Good one. Or perhaps January 10.
That’s good, hope Republicans don’t switch back in 2013. Personally I don’t mind the concept of a filibuster, but I want to see someone up there speaking for hours. Cots in the aisles, that sort of thing.
They are dining on Kobe Beef and Maine Lobster at the Club. Please DO NOT disturb them....
Does he REALLY want to open that Pandora’s box? Because I am expecting the Rats to lose control of the Senate and WH next year and that will mean that the GOP could easily overturn a LOT of Rat legislation.
Once again, we all predicted this in 2005. That the Republicans who didn’t want to change the rules because “it would set bad precedent” were idiots because the Dems would do it any way if they ever get majority and needed it. That the Dems don’t need “precedent”.
No it’s quite a surprise. Reid is very competent at legislative chess. What is the endgame here?
This is a big ace to play. For what gain? Does he think shaming the GOP is going to help him in the House? I see this as a very risky PR move. Risky says they’re very desperate.
I hope this action by the criminal known as Harry Reid is exposed as just that, criminal!
Yep, AP reports:
“Democrats used their majority powers to push through a rule change that restricts the offering of non-relevant amendments to legislation.”
“Nothing to see here!”
Oh, I hate our media so.
No, you can bet Hussein and that moron Reid planned this. Such was the reason for Hussein’s worship service today.
This crap doesn’t happen accidentally.
Of course, the same eager-to-fellate-Hussein media will NOT REPORT THIS action by Hairy reed as a breach of Senate tradition...it’ll be a “brave action” used to “help Americans get back to work”.
When the Republicans merely THOUGHT about using this option for judicial posts, the media screamed bloody murder.
This is not a merely “within the rules” option by Hussein’s cult—it is something that could very well destroy any comity left between the sides. Hussein isn’t about governing wisely. His cult is about destroying liberty, debate, differing opinions, and opposing factions.
(see: Hayek’s “Road to Serfdom”—central planners must take away anything standing in the way of individual liberty. This is part of that plan.)
The surprise move stunned Republicans, who did not expect Reid to bring heavy artillery to what had been a humdrum knife fight over amendments to China currency legislation.

“Which RINOs voted for this???”
All of the usual suspects — Graham, Snow, Collins, et al. But the big surprise was Jeff Sessions.
Just wait until they get into the minority! one GOP staffer growled.
Hopefully GOP senators feel the same.
I agree. Reid is pulling this out to force the House to vote or table the bill. Problem is, it’s a year from the election, and nobody will care in 3 months, let alone a year. The GOP will get the majority in the Senate in 2012, and now Reid has set a precedent that the GOP will use to finally kill ObamaCare, with Cain or Perry signing the bill finally ending that socialistic takeover.
