Cain Says He ‘Would Not Be Comfortable’ As Perry's Running Mate
National Journal ^ | October 6, 2011 | Lindsey Boerma

HOUSTON -- Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Thursday that he would definitely consider an invitation to run as the eventual nominee’s vice president, except if the nominee turns out to be Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Cain, who rocketed to the top tier of the GOP field in several recent polls, was asked by reporters on the campaign trail for his thoughts on a hypothetical invitation to run as the eventual nominee’s No. 2. After offering the obligatory comment that he intends to be the nominee, Cain said, “Quite frankly, based upon Gov. Perry’s position on some issues, I would not be comfortable being his vice presidential nominee.”

Those issues include Perry’s moderate stances on immigration. As governor, Perry supported legislation offering in-state college tuition for the children of illegal immigrants, which has become a flash point in his campaign. Cain said, “Issues relative to being soft on the border, issues relative to the whole, you know, tuition for children of illegal aliens. And I haven’t totally gone through all of his positions, but a lot of positions I have questions with.”

Cain, who is black, was critical of Perry after the Washington Post reported Sunday that his family owned a Texas hunting camp once known as “Niggerhead,” a word that was also painted on a rock near the camp’s entrance. Perry has maintained that his father painted over the word as soon as he bought the property in the 1980s. And Cain subsequently said he believed Perry’s explanation.

Of a vice presidential slot in general, Cain said, “I would not say no to being vice president of the United States. But it would depend upon who got the nomination. I will support who gets the nomination. I know I have said that there are some people right now who I cannot support, but I wouldn’t say no to it. I could say yes. But it has to be someone who I believe I can complement them in their job by being able to bring my skills to the table.”

I’m trusting Cain less and less. He has a problem with Perry but not Romney?

He did call them both "vanilla politicians." That was before he answered the question about the n-word rock on Perry's former ranch. In another thread, Cain is also quoted as not being 'comfortable' with the prospect of being VP nominee if Perry is the prez nominee. Really, his conversations have been getting sillier and sillier.

Btw, what if one of the white Republican nominees referred to Cain as a "Chunky Monkey" politician! Yeah, I know vanilla is supposed to mean bland, but the connotations were there. He could get away with it because he is b-l-a-a-a-c-k.

Excellent observations. In fact, Cain’s behavior and quotes have made me look closer at Perry and Perry looks a lot better to me now.

Another thing to note is that Cain is currently selling his book. He is first of all a businessman.

Cain is so clueless on foreign policy that, although he gave the standard evangelistic affirmation to Israel’s right to exist, he also said he has no problem with the “right of return” for “Palistinians.” Huh?

I’m a 100% Perry supporter. I was just pointing out that I don’t get why some conservatives like Rubio and not Perry because their immigration stances are similar. As for Cain, I was hoping he might be on Perry’s ticket but his race baiting totally turned me off. I’ve always loved West but he said he wasn’t interested some time ago. I do know we need a strong second amendment person and my preference is someone with military experience. A Perry-West ticket would be great.

Perry, Cain, Bachmann or Newt makes into the final 2, they will win over Mittens

Christ on a crutch, that's a pretty ugly field.

Quite frankly, its beyond pathetic that the GOP can't come up with better candidates for this office.

A 2 term congresswoman with a gay husband, a guy who has n-word and illegal alien issues and voted for algore and Mondale, a black pizza salesman, and a genius who is smarter than all of the above squared yet has been damaged by the communist press well beyond what they pulled on Joe McCarthy.

Palin wisely wanted no part, what we need is an ALTERNATIVE.

I smell a rat ... and I know how one smells.

Cain proclaims himself available as a veep, but not to Perry.

What other viable candidate is around these days?

I think he’s making a little under the table offer to support Romney for the veep spot.

I told you all not to trust Cain.

The fact is resourceful people will simply cut though, climb over or tunnel under a fence that is left unattended.

If one were serious about controlling the border, the fence would not be left unattended. Fencing has worked well many places including San Diego. Fences are just one part of a comprehensive border control plan. The border in Mexico is controlled by narco-terrorists, treaties are meaningless.

With time a majority of people would realize the most obvious fact that Cain goal in this campaign is to become Romney VP and he is working as an attack dog for Romney against Perry. I hope that this will happen before it is too late.

“Good for him, Perry is a Poser, Cain is saying what he means and means what he says, he knows Perry is fake.”

And Cain’s buddy Romney is real?....LMAO

I pray that it will and Cain is sure helping it along with his latest proclamation about being willing to be a veep to someone other than Perry.

Shouldn’t he at least have the sense to do this sort of deal privately.

I started wondering about his Romney connections when he joined the Washington Post in accusing Perry of racisim over this stupid discredited rock story.

It was just suspiciously different from his previous stance regarding the other candidates.

I think he’s had a plan all along that he couldn’t put into good effect until he gained a little support.

“Wake up folks before it is too late.”

It’s already too later for a lot of people on FR. They post the cute little sound bytes like “The Cain Train” and “Here comes a HermanCain” (like the player is some sort of storm to be reckoned with).

What they don’t see is a person who is nothing more than a useful stooge of Romney in attacking Perry. Cain is not going to win the nomination but he is going to try to win it for Romney, that’s why he’s out fishing with this stupid announcement.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Maybe Jim should start to realize that these Cain devotees are pimping for Romney and they just don’t know it.

If you want to think Perry has N-word issues (and apparently you do) then I can’t stop you, but there is no known instance of Perry using the N-word ever, nor is there any sign in his over 11 years of very public life that he is racist in any way, shape or form.

Incredible and very sad indeed. However there is good amount of time before the first vote cast in the primaries for the majority of Republicans to discover the real Herman Cain and his intent to give Romney the nomination in exchange for a VP spot on the Romney ticket.

Yes and he is a race baiter on the top of that. Trust me, there is some really bad stuff in this guy past and it is going to come out soon.

“Perry is trailing Cain in several polls, so you could say Perry is being the spoiler here by not bowing out.”

That’s about the dumbest thing I’ve ever read...why would a candidate “bow out” months before the first primary?

Har!

Perception is reality, and Perry needs to fight.

Nothing but silence, which proves he is a slimy politician and not a man of conviction.

This is a guy who supported the racist algore and hunted negro head!!!

He needs to grow a narrow mustache and surround himself with some goons wearing snappy uniforms if he wants to get ahead.

Many have very short memories and they do not recall at all that the McCain campaign was pronounced totally DEAD by everyone in the fall of 2007 and until few days before the first vote in the Iowa caucus where McCain came back and then won the nomination by the end of March.
