Perry's haul for the long haul
Politico ^ | 10/5/11 | Maggie Haberman

What Perry’s fundraising shows, his backers argue, is that he’s the only conservative candidate in the race with the resources to compete against Mitt Romney over the long haul. In other words, he can spend his way out of his current predicament.

And while Perry has likely lost his chance to run away with the Republican presidential nomination, his eye-opening cash haul — collected in just 49 days — suggests he may yet be able to wrest it from Romney in an expensive, bruising nomination fight that drags on into spring.

“He is going to have the resources to run a comprehensive and lengthy campaign,” said Mississippi Republican National Committeeman Henry Barbour, a Perry supporter. “It’s clear that he would have raised more than $17 million if not for the loss of momentum that happened in Florida, which makes the $17 million more impressive.”

(snip)

If the Perry team is correct and Romney has already disqualified himself with too many GOP primary voters, there’s only one other candidate in the race who looks capable of cobbling together the right set of votes to claim the nomination.

“We’re 90 days out from the first ballot being cast and I don’t know whether Romney can seal the deal,” said Jeff Ballabon, an influential GOP fundraiser supporting Perry. “But $17 million in seven weeks from 20,000 in 50 states just said loud and clear that Perry can.”

Well, the reason why they’re hitting Perry and not Cain is
1) it’s easier to hit Perry
2) Perry does have the money.

But we’re talking about electability, right?

And Perry does not perform in the head to heads as well as Romney and Paul.

Bullies and know-it-all’s can be in any candidate’s camp. I have certainly met a few, as you well know, but I don’t like it when we do it either. Don’t respond. They can’t bully a vacume. Hang in there. We all need to chill. We’re in war and have the jitters. No excuse though.

And Perry can’t make a speech and he can’t debate and he can face hostile reporters. Perry will blow-up at some point and that will be it. In the end it will be Perry’s own words that do him in. He has already demonstrated that.

We get it. You’re upset that your candidate has tanked. Do you think behaving like a child and bashing and belittling a distinguished, accomplished and honorable businessman who has the support of the Conservative grassroots is going to win you fans to your open borders, mumble-mouthed RINO ? You’re embarrassing yourself.

Yeah, it stinks what our candidates have to do to get elected. It really does.

He did four debates in 27 years. It hasn’t been a priority for him. After the last debate, you can bet it is now.

“....why is Romney still going after him and not Cain? “ <<<

I’ll tell you why. IT’S THE MONEY. Period. Romney is trying to sew up ALL of it, knowing perfectly and full well that Rick was going to end this quarter well funded from the get-go. Romney wants that cash flow stopped ASAP, and knows that MUCH of that money came in before Rick imploded. That’s the fact. Now, if Rick returns with his pants on, it will be a new game. If not, we’re in trouble and it will be Romney with the billion dollars for the win.

Yes, we are talking about electability. Romney has been running for president for five years. He can't sell it.

Cain has never been elected, not even for dog-catcher. Perry has never lost an election. I'd say he's electable.

Wow, that’s embarrassing.

When W stumbled, you at least knew what he was trying to say.

I have no idea what Perry was saying.

If you are right, then we get four more years of Obama. I believe you’re wrong. Perry had a terrible debate performance. It won’t happen again. As for speeches, he’s a fine speech-maker and has demonstrated for 27 years his ability to sell it.

Perry has a short fuse. It won’t take much for someone to push his button and that will be that.

Herman Cain would make Obama look like the chump he is in a debate, neither Mitt nor Perry can beat Obama in a debate, Obama would run rings around both, but Cain would stop him in his tracks.

” ...the only thing Perry has is his texas donor base, and the hope he wouldn’t suck on the stump. “ <<<

Actually just read his money came from mostly “small donors across 50 states”. Don’t know the break down really, but he has cross state support and being the president of the Governor’s Association was no small thing and will prove helpful, hopefully. BTW, Perry is wonderful on the stump—it’s the dang debate thing where he let his pants fall down.
Bet that changes, don’t you? It better.

Obama stunk at debates in his primaries. He got better, but is still just okay. Perry will get better, too. As for Perry and a short fuse, don’t mistake his being direct as a short fuse. They are not the same thing.

In the last Pres Primary my money went to Duncan Hunter. I gave him my last money the day before he dropped out. I guess I’m curious as to what money was in the various candidate’s coffers this time four years ago.

After Hunter dropped out, and after McCain won the Primary, I gave money to McCain-Palin..because I liked Palin, not because I liked McCain. I didn’t vote for him in the Primaries.

In my immediate family the primary votes were divided evenly between Huckabee, McCain, and Romney. I sure don’t remember the venom four years ago that I see this year.

I don’t think that Cain is going to get the money to stay in this. I think Bachmann is probably in the Red at this point moneywise. I see Ron Paul, almost as a third party, libertarian candidate, but his supporters are passionate.

So, trying to be a realist, I would say at this point, it’s going to be Perry and Romney who are the last ones standing.

My big issues are the 2nd amendment, and pro life, so, I will go with Perry. Also, I decided my line in the sand would be government imposed healthcare..Those three issues make Romney a no go for me.

Such an ugly and bitter attitude and always “it’s everyone else’s fault but mine.” So typical of not only Slick Willard and Zero and their supporters, but of La Raza Rick’s, too. Take some responsibility for a change.

The $17 mil came from 20,000 donors, most from outside Texas.

How can you say Perry is better when he refused to debate during his run for Governor?
