What Perrys fundraising shows, his backers argue, is that hes the only conservative candidate in the race with the resources to compete against Mitt Romney over the long haul. In other words, he can spend his way out of his current predicament.
And while Perry has likely lost his chance to run away with the Republican presidential nomination, his eye-opening cash haul collected in just 49 days suggests he may yet be able to wrest it from Romney in an expensive, bruising nomination fight that drags on into spring.
He is going to have the resources to run a comprehensive and lengthy campaign, said Mississippi Republican National Committeeman Henry Barbour, a Perry supporter. Its clear that he would have raised more than $17 million if not for the loss of momentum that happened in Florida, which makes the $17 million more impressive.

If the Perry team is correct and Romney has already disqualified himself with too many GOP primary voters, theres only one other candidate in the race who looks capable of cobbling together the right set of votes to claim the nomination.
Were 90 days out from the first ballot being cast and I dont know whether Romney can seal the deal, said Jeff Ballabon, an influential GOP fundraiser supporting Perry. But $17 million in seven weeks from 20,000 in 50 states just said loud and clear that Perry can.

You think he isn’t filing paperwork to be in New Hampshire.
I don’t care one way or another about Cain, it seems like Cain is picking up much of the Palins right now, so I mention Cain.
Perry is the only one who is completely unacceptable.
I’d take Romney over Perry in a head to head. But I’d prefer neither of them be there at all.
Has anyone asked for DeMint to join the race recently?
Do you live in a cave or something? Obama isn’t going to raise anywhere near as much as Perry will. His last eat and greet drew contributors at $3/plate.
the only thing Perry has is his texas donor base, and the hope he wouldn’t suck on the stump.
He’s such a target for attacks on his record.
That’s actually false, what you just said. Part of what is amazing about Perry raising $17 million in 49 days is the number of individual contributors. Over 20,000 unique donors. OOPS!
Hook ‘em horns!
Funny you mention that. I was thinking the same thing.
They both suck. They’re both the worst.
The tea party will have a candidate, and it won’t be Perry and it won’t be Romney.
Cain has some impressive talk.
It is just talk, and that playing the race card thing ticked me off big time.
Perry has actctually walked the walk. And yeah, he has screwed up a few times - no one denies that. He screwed up big time on a couple issues.
I still think he’ll be the best and most electable candidate. At least the guy is conservative on most issues! Time to pack the house and senate with people who will keep his toes to the fire.
I do not think that phrase means what you think it means (accent Mandy Patinkin).
Oh I know all right, and so does Perry, a virtual master of it.
Yeah, in the year when the tea party exists and should be mighty, people are talking about the 2 worst candidates as front-runners.
The people complaining about him playing the race card I have found were usually overly concerned about Herman race already.
” i like perry...just beat obama. “ <<<
Count me in. The mission is to topple the Marxist and that is the main reason Romney has the loft he enjoys, due entirely to his polling against Obama. The ranks want to close early and line up behind someone who shows they can win, so they can begin to pull the party together and go after Obama, en masse. Nothing wrong with the mission, but Rick needs to come into the October circular firing squad, called a “debate”, with his pants pulled up and loaded for bear. Only he can turn this around, and challenge not Romney so much, but his front runner status. We can’t do this for him. He is the one who will dethrone RINOs in Congress not Romney. The RINOs will run all over Cain, if he actually were ever to be elected. Rick is marvelous in civilized settings and has the stuff, but if these enemy camp debates are going to be the disgusting decider then, yes, he has to step up. We will know soon on the debates. Can hardly bare to watch, but bet he takes it seriously this time and respects the stage.
It’s almost cruel to play with some of these posters, they’re so easily flustered. Oh, what the heck! :o)
You-nailed-it bump.
I just share JimRob's reservations about Cain's 9-9-9 .... becoming 20-20-20 and hello, VAT, to reload and rescrew the retirees and bring them all hobbling out of retirement, looking for work they can still do and getting paid 25 cents on the dollar for it, so they can pay their taxes and eat.
I think that's what the NWO and bankster types want. With all the screwing around with Social Security that's been going on, and "we've got to raise the retirement age" articles showing up in trained-monkey middlebrow opinion rags (like The Economist, which dedicated a whole issue to "back to work"), it really sounds "like a plan".
It's like a boss who won't give his hands time off to die. "You owe me! We've got work to do!"
Cain has made a fool of himself recently, too. This is what primaries are for. The candidates are honing their skills. Perry is a lousy debator. You’re right. But he’s an excellent candidate, and is working on his debate skills. Romney has been practicing for five years. He’s been running for FIVE YEARS. Of course he can make a speech. He just can’t sell it. That’s why he can’t break 25% support among Republicans.
People are going to vote for Perry.
That is another lie. Most of that $17 million came from out of state.
