WASHINGTON, Oct 4 (Reuters) - At least one well-heeled backer of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie shifted support to former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney on Tuesday after Christie declined to join the Republican U.S. presidential race, and others are expected to follow.

After Christie's announcement, Home Depot co-founder Ken Langone signed up with the Romney camp, according to the campaign.

Langone, industrialist David Koch and hedge fund giant Paul Singer were among the elite fund-raisers who implored the Christie to seek the Republican nomination to run against President Barack Obama in 2012.

Romney throws shout-outs to Jeb, Rubio in The Villages appearance "Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is trying to send the message that he’s close to one nationally-acclaimed Florida Republican, former governor Jeb Bush, and admires the other, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio.

In an appearance at The Villages today, Romney, the current frontrunner in the 2012 Republican presidential race, made called Bush an expert on education and advocated Bush-style education policies."............

Home Depot has a very strong inclination to the left, from what I can see.

The Establishment types are terrified at the thought that an evangelical Christian and principled conservative like Cain, Bachmann, or Palin might get the nomination. With the faux-conservative candidacy of Al Gore Demonrat Rick Perry collapsing, they are floundering around. Too bad, country-clubbers; your day is over. The Tea Party didn’t exist when you ruled the roost. But we’ll be generous. We will take your money and let you ride in the back of the bus—you know, the way you did with the conservative base for years. LOL.

I still am having trouble with the underlying premise - Christie’s appeal is that he comes across as fiscally conservative and not a panderer. He speaks his mind. He is very, very soft on a number of issues (”global warming”, Second Amendment, etc.) but his appeal is his plain speaking.

Why on EARTH would anyone who appreciates Christie be on the Romney team? Romney is a complete panderer who even implemented the fiscal black hole of Romneycare. He is the DREAM opponent of the mainstream media because he helps innoculate Obama against Obamacare and big spending. Then they’ll go to work on his Mormon faith. What am I missing?

Marco Rubio is the real deal. Romney invoking him is just more pandering.

What am I missing?

Sectionalism. Identification with profession and business outlook.

What a stupid article. I doubt anyone was sitting on the sidelines waiting expectantly for Christie to announce.

Being fiscally conservative in a bankrupt and corrupt state is not a sufficient basis for being a Presidential candidate. The crisis afflicting the U.S. is not just about money. It is about collapse of public and private ethics and morality. It is about complete violation of the Constitution. It is about a stupid foreign policy which sacrifices the national security and wealth of the nation on the altar of sentimental, naive attempts to make nations out of tribal hellholes.

No one who thinks murdering the unborn is acceptable, thinks invasion of the U.S. by hostile aliens is OK, and supports "free trade" with Communist China can claim not to be a panderer...or worse.

Dude - I was simply contrasting Christie’s record of saying “no” with Romney’s record of saying “yes”. I don’t buy the underlying premise that potential Christie supporters will end up with Romney. Seems like there is a big difference in their appeal on the fiscal side. That’s all.

Perry was a CONSERVATIVE DEMOCRAT AND HAS BEEN A CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN FOR WELL OVER 20 YEARS. Bachmann, Cain, and possibly Palin is not likely to win the nomination. These same people are the ones saying Perry is not conservative. Big lies.

Ken and diogenesis. I do not support Romney. I am for Cain and will support him unless and until Sarah gets in. If she does, I will support her. I honestly hope it works out to a Palin/Cain ticket.

However, I will say this. If, however it happens, Romney were to win the nomination, I will vote for him against Obama. Anything else would be much worse for our nation IMHO.

One of the myths which propped up the Perry candidacy is this one about his being a "conservative Democrat." He backed liberal Democrat Al Gore, so the spin is that "Gore was a conservative Democrat," even though ACU records clearly show that Gore was a pro-abortion liberal, and was already an environmental extremist at that time. And this was 1988, after 8 glorious years of Reagan conservative Republicanism, but Rick Perry stubbornly clung to the Demonrat Party. Again, the spinmeisters have an answer: everyone in TX was a Democrat! Totally false, esp. in 1988. Even after trying to fool people by changing his party label, Slick Rick backed liberal Rudy Giuliani only 4 years ago. He continues to show his liberal instincts with his pandering to La Raza and the Muslim lobby CAIR, and his attempt, without even going through the State legislature, to mandate govt. vaccination of kids against STDs.

You can continue to spin things to make Perry look like a conservative, but he is nothing but a slick third-rate politician, as everyone saw in the debates.
