He hasn’t had a serious contender since gaining office. Debates? Few, far between with any of them. He’s got an “R” next to his name and that’s pretty much all it took to stay Governor.
He may be an average-decent speaker from prepared copy, et al, but he’s (clearly) not one to speak spontaneously in any clear or convincing manner. He stumbles, mumbles, and rambles too much. Sounds kinda like an idiot.
His debate performances are not the exception, they’re pretty much closer to the rule.

But not according to those he meets out on the stump. Gov. Perry is a superb retail politician and executive. He relates to the people, listens to their concerns and they approve of his conversations with them.

Have you had your head in a hole? That last two elections he has had some extremely strong contenders...in the primary he was way behind Kay Baily then beat her by 300,000 votes.

I don't think he's an idiot in general, but I don't think he is ready for what's after the primaries. He needs a Karl Rove to get him through this and he doesn't have one. He needs to stick to whatever script they come up with, because when he goes off the script, he gets in trouble.
I'm reminded of when he spoke in front of a Tea Party gathering and made a comment about some folks supporting secession. If you look at what he actually said, he was never in favor of supporting secession. The people claiming he supported secession were lying, but the media ran with it though, and Perry freaked out and issued a very strong press release from the Governor's office saying that he would never support secession. Look at his performances during his 2010 election, not very articulate when speaking off-the-cuff or giving interviews, having to explain himself later on or just dodging the issue. His stumbling through that question about abstinence last year during the Texas Tribune was just painful, but we've seen the same thing before. Jump ahead to the debate last month and the heartless comment he made. Media goes crazy, Perry's response was to stumble into a non-apology that pissed off some people even more.
You can't do that kind of stuff in a general election, you just can't. The media and your opponent will tear you to shreds.
