Michael Steele on Perry’s Hunting Camp: “It’s Very Troubling”
TIME ^ | 10/3/11

Posted on 10/03/2011 12:00:27 PM PDT by roses of sharon

Even as Texas Governor Rick Perry downplays the story of a racist epithet painted on a rock outside a property that he co-leased, black Republicans are not giving him the benefit of the doubt. First came GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain, who said yesterday that Perry handled the episode in a “very insensitive” way.

And in an interview with TIME on Monday morning, former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele also scolded Perry. “It’s very troubling on some many levels, for so many reasons,” Steele said. Steele said questions over when and how clearly the rock had been painted over miss the point:

So I’m going to lease lease a property.....Do you paint over the rock? Or do you just remove the damn thing altogether? So, I’m sorry–my attitude is just remove the rock. That is the ultimate statement for me. Just get rid of the rock. Unless the thing is a damn boulder.

Steele stopped short, however, of impugning Perry personally. “I am not ascribing anything to anyone’s motives or decisions,” he said. He added, however, that he agrees with Cain’s criticism: “I think Herman Cain was right. It does lead one to feel that there was a level of insensitivity about how this would be perceived by the larger community. I’m not just talking about black folks, I’m talking about all folks. You would think that even in the 1980s that there would still be some sense of, ‘Do we really want this on our property? Even though we’re leasing it, still, do you really want that there? And just painting over it?”

At that, Steele, who believes the Republican Party needs to make amends with black voters for its “Southern Strategy,” simply sighed with exasperation.

Not without filing an Environmental Impact Statement, completing a Type I Archeological and Historical Study, submitting an erosion and sediment control plan and obtaining all applicable federal, state on local PERMITS, you don't!

Exactly! but Steele is too elitist to know how things work in the real world.

I do not believe the lease was titled NHead. It was on a rock.

If I had aspirations to be a candidate, I would have done whatever was legal since I didn’t own it. I would paint it, turn it, which they did.

With no aspirations of a public life, I would have done nothing.

Not to mention he has no idea how big the rock is. He**, it could go many feet down into the ground. Anyone who has ever dug a hole and tried to move a rock that was in the way knows what I am talking about. Besides, they didn’t own the property, they only leased it, how would they have the authority to move rocks and such around. Maybe Steele would have gotten his hands on some nitro or C4 and smashed the rock that way. I am sure the property owner would be good with that.

Steele and Cain are both losers in this non story—they are the story.

Cain didn't feign offense regarding Perry. Just the n-word.

The implication was that Perry had the N-word on a billboard somewhere on his property.

If you left the Republican party, you are either a full-fledged member of the Democrat party or totally irrelevant to the political process. Get in here and fight and make the Republican party better.

Perry himself is a RINO. He used to run as a Democrat and in fact won office and served as a Democrat ~ even as an Algore supporter.

That's pretty RINO stuff BTW ~ then he became a Republican, but in the Souf' a RINO is a Democrat who ran as a Republican.

Subsequently he has not hewed to the Conservative line on many things ~ e.g. subsidized instate tuition for Mexicans but not Americans, etc. He even said those of us who demand patriotism first are HEARTLESS.

If you are referring to Mr. Steele he was the RNC chairman during the time of the greatest Republican electoral victory in the history of the Republic. He was always a Republican, served as a Republican, and supported Republican candidates. He believes in America first, last and always. His Right to Life credentials are certainly intact.

What you have in Perry is a "moderate" who you have asked we Conservatives to support because he's not as liberal as Obama.

As you can see he he has enemies among the Democrats in Texas who will tell any lie needed to hurt him ~ in fact they'll tell you about the "N Word" painted on a rock in West Texas. Frankly I believe Perry and not his Leftwingtard enemies on this and many other things.

I think he should sue them.

he answered a question asked to him by Chris Wallace. He gave an HONEST answer

Sorry but you are full of sh**. Cain called Perry insensitive. Read the transcript, it was posted on FR earlier today and Cain called Perry insensitive. Is that an "honest" answer? Cain was playing the frickin' race card and he lied today and tried to deny he said Perry was insensitive but his words are on tape and in print. I am not a Perry bot, neither am I for Cain. Let's tell the truth. If you like Cain that is fine but see him how he really is and stop lying about what he actually said.

If that is true then the name "Niggerhead" was on the lease Perry signed, no?

No, in fact, you can see the deer lease here http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s213/RedCarlisle/huntinglease.jpg

The proterty is called "River Ranch"

You can read the story in the Washington Post if you want. There's no implication. In fact, the people who wrote the story didn't even understand the lay of the land nor the conditions of open range in West Texas.

There's so much wrong in the Post story when you get to examining what they specifically said that it's pretty clear it's just propaganda ~ and the target was Cain ~ else you wouldn't have Chris Wallace asking him ~ you'd have Christ Wallace asking ROMNEY or someone else!

Use your head, the Democrats set this up ~ it's fake ~ it's not real ~ it's a racist ploy by Leftwingtard POS's.

OK, I'll take Perry and you guys at your word, it was just a word on a rock, not the name of the acreage.

Maybe, in Rick Perry's honor, they can rename the land to a word more suitable for Rick Perry... like "Bonehead".

If all that is true, why did Cain accuse Perry of being “insensitive?”

Cain didn’t play the race card. Chris Wallace attempted to deal it to him though.

Wrong, the transcript of what Cain said was posted on FR today. Cain said Perry was insensitive and that he shouldn't have let the words stay on the rock for as long as he did. Which is BS because it was not only painted over immediately after his father leased it, the rock was turned over. Cain Played the race frickin race card and people who back him should look at what he actually said and admit the truth.

In the last five years I’ve talked to a LOT of “ex” republicans. The number has blown me away. And we all left for the same reasons.

I see the republican party as the modern Whig party. Sometimes you don’t change something from within. You let it die and build on the corpse. Or is that corps. I forget. ;-D

It’s risky, but not that much right now. It really doesn’t matter who is in power at this particular juncture. The ship has hit the iceberg. It’s going down slow, but it is going down.

At least the small group of lifeboats that are left will have a conservative leader. And they will eventually hit land, where they can rebuild what once was.

It’s just a piece of a far larger property. It is designated by a lot number. There was no name nor a sign. You can look at 33 deg. 01’23.03”N
99 deg. 25’21.91”W and check it out.

I followed BOTH interviews yesterday, and read the transcripts NUMEROUS TIMES. You don’t know how to read. You just look at words and get excited.
