Cain Says He Should Have Spoken Up For Gay Soldier
Associated Press ^ | October 2, 2011

Posted on 10/02/2011 3:00:31 PM PDT by Baladas

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Sunday that he should not have stayed silent after the audience at a GOP debate booed a gay soldier serving in Iraq.

The Georgia businessman told ABC's "This Week" that it would have been "appropriate" for him to have defended the soldier. None of the candidates on stage at the Sept. 22 forum responded to the boos.

"In retrospect, because of the controversy it has created and because of the different interpretations that it could have had, yes, that probably — that would have been appropriate," Cain said, when asked if he should have asked the audience to respect the soldier.

Cain said it wasn't immediately clear to him what had drawn the audience's scorn, adding, "I happen to think that maybe they were booing the whole 'don't ask, don't tell' repeal more so than booing that soldier."

The so-called don't ask, don't tell policy barring gays from serving openly in the military was officially lifted last month.

He wasn’t responding to Perry, he was responding to the language.

Cain: isn’t a more vile, negative word than the N-word, and for him [Perry] to leave it there as long as he did, until before, I hear, they finally painted over it, is just plain insensitive to a lot of black people in this country,”

That isn't a response to the language -- he called Rick Perry "plain insensitive". THat was a direct attack on Rick Perry. And a totally false one.

Cain is making the FATAL error of starting to respond to EVERYTHING because his popularity has risen.

He's started responding because he's finally started being asked. It can only be considered "FATAL" if you've found out something about him you didn't know and don't like.

That's what this process is about. I've found out, for example, that Bachmann is a ditz and Perry is, too. Cain's answers have actually shown me some substance in the man. I have doubts still about his engagement with national and international affairs, but he isn't pandering.

I like that in a candidate.

Wow, I can't believe a bunch of smart FReeepers are falling for this shit......again??????

Don't you all see what is happening here? Freaking idiots we are, we fall for this crap every single time.

I say screw it, let's just put obamao in for another 4 years, yeah, that's so much better then having a not ready for prime time candidate in office.

Just WTF is prime time? Who decides what it is? The freaking LSM? C'mon folks, let's get a grip!

Next thing I expect to see here is that Cain is a racist bigot, I mean the media says so so it must be true....right? Ya'all seem to parrot their lines like little birds begging for seedlings.

What a bunch of week kneed wannabes this place has turned out to be, not to mention a disappointment.

First Palin. Then Bachmann. Then Cain.

The supporters of the establishment candidates are working hard to make sure that no conservative will get in the White House.

Okay. Two things Cain needs to do:

1. refuse to comment on any story until he meets with his media consultants.

2. hire new media consulatants.

“Cain is as good as it gets.”

If some guy who has never held one day of elective office and never had one minute's experience dealing with a opposition Congress and a hostile Media...

who we know virtually NOTHING about except what his resume says...

whose biggest accomplishment in life is turning around a string of pizza parlors...

If that guy is truly "AS GOOD AS IT GETS" for the office of President of the United States... Then may God help the USA.

Bigger question is for FOX who selected this question from over 100,000 submitted via YouTube for the debate. More Gotcha journalstic malpractice. Going for controversy over substance. We are not the enemy. The Progressives and their Drive By Media are.

I truly believe that Sarah's trial by fire from the slimes on the left has strengthened her like no other candidate.

The Left know they screwed the pooch big time by not destroying her when they had the chance. They've made her stronger than we could’ve ever imagined.

Sarah is the only one who can fight not only the Left, but the GOP establishment (and that means you Laura “Inside-the-beltway” Ingraham) and win.

I truly believe it's this Lady's destiny to run and be President.

Thanks for your perspective. Of the group left on the stage, Cain is still the best of the rest.

He and Bachmann seem to be the most Constitutionally trustworthy of those currently on the stage and that's the most important criteria to me.

Unfortunately, Bachmann has shown herself to be too gaff prone and I can't get by a couple of them to vote for her in the Primary.

My only complaint against Cain is his lack of experience campaigning at this level, but I don't mind trading some lack of experience if I get trustworthy in return.

Cain's a smart man whose life story is all about improving, both himself and whatever he is working on. If he can do the same in the primary, he'll get the nomination. But, he has some work to do.

The Constitution and conservatism must win in 2012!

Yeah, Cain is 90% on track but let's destroy him over the 10% of his misgivings.

Remember the old saying "stepping on your own dic#"? How about cutting your nose off to spite your face?

Would obamao be a better solution?

Look, at this point I have NO dog in this race (yet), but the vitriol that is voiced toward our own candidates here has got to stop.......obama is the enemy, right?

Exactly. How easily people become infatuated...

and they asked Rick Santorum, who wasn’t even in the Senate for the repeal - should’ve asked Ron Paul this, he’s the only one out of the lot that voted for the repeal.

They got what they wanted, and while booing is rude, that soldier has no sympathy from me. He “lied to get in”??? No he didn’t, don’t ASK, don’t TELL

Jim, I watched Herman with Christiane Amanpour today. Herman Cain handled this liberal setup question as well as it could be handled. You should know by now that you can’t believe anything AP says, especially if it is posted on NPR! He handled the “Niggerhead” question by saying that she was reluctant to say the word, so he would say if for her. Then he said it was insensitive to many Blacks, which it is. He didn’t pander to anyone.

BTW: niggerhead: An antiquaited logging and trucking term used to define a large round rock or outcropping of rocks usually on an unpaved road bed that could damage a vehicle.
