His aides believe that his decade of experience as a border-state governor bolsters his credibility on immigration and border security.
He said he vetoed a Texas bill that would have given illegal immigrants driver's licenses, helped pass a bill requiring voter identification at the polls, spent $400 million on security measures to help secure the stateâs border with Mexico, and strongly opposed granting amnesty to people who illegally entered the United States.
"I'm a governor. I don't have the pleasure of standing on the stage and criticizing," Perry said. "I have to deal with these issues."

Why don’t you check the 2009 Perry campaign too.
Nice try though, to make this about Palin, when you know deep down that Perry is a sinking ship.
So you Perry sycophant illegal apologists can stick it.
Why would I check the Perry 2009 campaign for a comment from Palin? Her entire philosophy is pretty much Fox comments and Facebook postings, plus the occasional tweet. Hard to get much from her “shortened” tenure as the governor of Alaska. Not many Canadians or Russians crashing the border to get in on the free oil checks that Alaskans enjoy.
Perry has a real job. It’s different when you actually have to do something as opposed to just yak about it.
Wow. You'd think as a governor, Perry could do that. Too bad his cowboy boot is always stuck in his mouth- when his mouth isn't otherwise busy kissing the asses of Hispanics.
So damn hilarious watching you Perrywinkles scurry on a sinking ship, too stupid to know when it's time to jump off.
You'd rather sacrifice conservative principles, and the rights of American citizens and taxpayers to support another 'compassionate conservative' who flip flops more than Romney.
People like you are a small minority even among conservatives. Palin's approach is more reasonable than most of the virulent posters here on Free Republic. She recognizes that once the border is secure, you have to do something other than deport 20 million illegal aliens. She supports a "path to citizenship" which I violently oppose. Illegal aliens should NEVER be given Citizenship. EVER. They will undoubtedly be allowed to seek some kind of legal status and that should include a provision that they NEVER be allowed to VOTE and NEVER be allowed to become Citizens of the United States.
As far as the fence is concerned, I doubt if Sarah Palin or you or anyone who thinks a 1200 mile concrete barrier along the north side of the Rio Grande is a good idea, has thought about the implications of that idea.
To build such a barrier is to literally cede 1200 miles of the Rio Grande river to Mexico. They would have full control of the river once the barrier is erected. The Territory of Mexico would be increased from the middle of the river up to the fence.
As far as the DREAM act in Texas, the beneficiaries of that act have committed no crimes. They were brought here by their illegal alien parents. Many of them probably had no clue they were illegal until they were in high school or when they applied for driver's licenses or college. They are people without a country. Yes, I feel for them. Sarah Palin feels for them. Anyone with a heart should feel for them. And if you don't, then Perry is right. You have no heart.
Yawn. Who’s your candidate?
“Then, there is Saint Sarah Palin...”
You have already said more than you should and this makes you completely UNcredible. You project onto us what you have shown every indication of. It deserves no further response.
Why don’t you come on down here to Texas and solve the illegal problem for us and then to New Mexico, Arizona and California and solve it for them They are all border states.
Then go up to New England states and solve it for them cause they got a bunch of illegals running around there taking jobs from Americans too. Like the Irish, Canadians and the Europeans that come to the US on a vist and stay...Oh forgot their skin is white like we are so they blend in easier and are harder to find. Out of sight out of mind there. Try Boston its full of Irish illegals.
Everyone would celebrate your success with this problem that no one seems to be able to solve.
You might even get elected President. Then you can be the President that you want someone else to be.
Oh, and states like Arizona and Alabama are taking the RIGHT steps to get illegals to leave. But that won't work in Texas, right? It's probably heartless anyway.
And I proudly support the conservatives Cain, Bachmann- and Palin when she enters.
People like me? If you believe in rewarding illegals then you are on the wrong site. You might be in the right party, but then again, any self-respecting conservative abandoned the almighty (R) a long time ago.
Oh, and people like me... were the primary reason any amnesty bill was avoided a few years ago. I'm sure people like you were calling us heartless.
Think you might be calling the wrong person a “dumb ass” here.
Go sit back down in your chair and think about all the problems the US has and how your going to fix them cause the next President whoever it happens to be ain’t going to please you no how!
Seems to me the President would please everyone by putting the interests of America and its citizens first, not some bullcrap compassionate conservatism that panders to Hispanics.
You need to pay attention more. I have no time nor want for any RINO as President, and that includes Perry, Romney, Huckabee and Christie. And if you can’t handle criticism of Perry, you’ve got a long 16 months ahead of you.
I can handle criticism of Perry just fine
What I can’t deal with is people who don’t know all the facts and act like they do.
Done with you
Yeah, too bad you’ve sacrificed both facts and conservatism for Bush 2.0.
