BUFFALO, NY ( WKBW ) Sources tell Eyewitness News that a retired police officer interrupted a robbery in progress near a home on John Paul court, in the vicinity of William & Fillmore Avenue on the east side of the city.

The suspect who was shot apparently fled the scene to a nearby housing development.

In a release issued to Eyewitness News Thursday evening, Buffalo Police report that the suspect in this incident has died.

Buffalo police were called to investigate a person shot, and found a black male victim collapsed at 855 William Street in front of the Monsignor Adamski Apartment complex early Thursday afternoon.

"As it turns out the victim was a suspect in an armed robbery," according to Dennis J. Richards, chief of detectives.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

"Homicide Squad detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the robbery suspect early Thursday afternoon," according to Richards.

Two men had originally approached the 71 year old victim, as he got out of his vehicle in his nearby driveway just after 12:30pm. They robbed the victim of an undisclosed amount of cash. "However, the victim pulled out a gun, which he possesses legally, and a struggle ensued with the suspects," according to Richards.

During the struggle, one shot was fired, and the two suspects fled on foot. The one suspect, who had been shot, collapsed... and the other fled with the victim's cash, east through the lot towards Fillmore Avenue.

In a disturbing chain of events, police are now looking for not only the other robbery suspect - but another man who happened upon the scene.

Police learned that as the victim lie on the ground, two guns were removed by a passerby. One of the weapons police know to be the 40 caliber Glock weapon that the robbery victim pulled out in an effort to defend himself.

"An individual took two guns away from a dying man, and he needs to surrender those weapons to police," Richards said.

There are puzzling aspects to this story. Did the robber grab the victims gun after he was shot, disarm him, then run away?

The news writer is probably a recent graduate of the Columbia School of Journalism.

Of what use would these weapons be to this individual? If he uses one in defense of his life, he’d best hope the police don’t become involved. Otherwise, he’s going to be spending time in the slammer. I imagine he can only sell them for cash and that would be most irresponsible. But then...he’s already demonstrated a lack of scruples and low morals. Not much of a stretch there.

They want me to change. They say that their problems are caused by my white racism. I don't think so. I think maybe their ghetto culture needs to be tweaked a bit from the inside. I don't think I can do much to help.

Sorry, does not compute. More 21st century journalism.

The way I read it, the robber (who had a gun), was shot by the retired cop, who also had a gun. During the aftermath, a "bystander" (i.e. thug punk who was watching) stepped over and picked up the perp's dropped gun and the retired cop's gun (why the retired cop would have put his gun down, I don't know... if this happened after the cops had arrived and disarmed him then it is a major screw-up). Since there's no more information given about the circumstances, I am suspicious that this occurred because of someone's mistake ("Hey, where are the guns that were on the hood of the patrol car? Oh, crap!!!")...

The writer needs remedial ed, for sure...

John Paul Court near the Monsignor Adamski Apartment Complex. Sounds like names they use for “new” old slum areas.

More info, including photo of men ‘stealing’ gun from robber. Imagine, stealing from a dying stealer. How insensitive.

"recent graduate"

As the victim "lie" on the ground. Was the victim making up stories as he lay on the ground? Hey, but if this clown can get a job writing for a major paper, maybe I have a shot.

Yes, contradictions all over the place, missing pieces as well. Could be lousy editing, though.

We call the Buffalo Snews “Pravda on the Lake” for it’s crappy, slanted reporting.

Do they not have editors at this paper ?”””

Here in N Nevada, we have our own problems with the ABC channel in Reno. KOLO channel 8.

Yesterday I called them twice:

They showed a segment about a car on top of a child that passersby were trying to lift off the kid. The graphics said: FLORDIA I called & told them they might want to check & see how to spell FLORIDA.

Then they had a segment about a group of people being hit by a truck on the main street of Fernley & a child dying. They said the truck was red with large tires & that it was last seen heading south toward Silver Springs on Hwy 50 Alternate. I called again- all within 5 minutes & barely got a polite response.

Hwy 50 Alternate goes between Fernley & Fallon- an east west direction. Hwy 95 Alternate goes south to Silver Springs.

Besides the CHRONIC spelling errors on their graphics, they are truly geographically challenged.

When the Amtrack train was hit by the truck that hauls gravel, they kept a running update for 5 days on that event & kept identifying the road the trucker was on as Hwy 95 Alternate. The true place was Hwy 95. The two roads are about 45 miles apart at that juncture. I personally called them 3 times to get them to correct their continuing errors & got nowhere.

They must have a group of 4th grade interns working there.

I don’t know how they cannot be totally embarrassed by such crap. It is infuriating.

They don’t care and they think you’re nuts. Meanwhile, the rest of us think they’re sloppy with their research.

Monsignor Adamski Apartment complex- one of the fine, low income housing choices in Buffalo. I wonder what percentage are section 8, with drug business on the side?
