I agree that the traitor should have been killed. But Obama should have the guts to come out and tell why it was done and why it was the right thing to do.

We know he won’t because his crazy base would go bats**t.

when Anwar al-Awlaki came to study in the US, he came on a foreign student visa. You see, even though al-Awlaki was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, his parents were not American citizens. In fact, after his father completed his studies here, the family returned to Yemen. Anwar would not even be considered a 14th Amendment citizen, which states "All person born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside." Anwar's parents were never US citizens, nor did they intend to become citizens; neither did his parents have "a permanent domicile and residence in the United States,"  which is the standard according to the Supreme court decision in United States vs Wong Kim Ark.

According to the State Department, there are different rules, and, since al-Awlaki came to the US on a scholarship from Yemen, we can assume that he renounced his US citizenship, because Yemen does not recognize dual citizenship. Furthermore, his father was the Agriculture Minister in Yemen. Otherwise, why would al-Awlaki have come on a foreign student visa to study in Colorado in 1991?

If I were in a war and an American traitor was shooting at me or ordering others to shoot at me I would kill that SOB and not think twice.

This turkey was responsible for American deaths , he was supporting those who would kill Americans, he was in a combat zone. He is dead, and good riddance to bad rubbish.

This man was perhaps American by birth, but he was no American in my mind.

1. Obama (and Holder) wanted to read Miranda rights to combatants.

2. Obama wanted to close down Gitmo.

3, Obama wanted to give terrorists civil trials and not military trials.

4. The Left was screaming about wire tapping terrorists.

I’m about as conservative as they come. I have a little angst about the administration’s attitude.

If an individual did the same (shoot a fleeing felon) they’d be arrested for murder!

If Obama had any balls, he'd actually come forward and say, "This POS had actively waged war against the USA, and was directly responsible for a number of deaths of American citizens. He was not a criminal. He was an illegal enemy combatant, who is in no way covered by any of the covenants, accords, or agreements regarding warring parties. He was behind the slaughter of non-combatants, while hiding behind other non-combatants, placing them in direct danger. Had he been captured alive, the US military would have been within their rights to shoot him on sight."

We fought to free ourselves from a capricious king over two centuries ago. When we have a president acting like a medieval monarch, we have a problem. “Off with their heads,” is not the way our founders envisioned the powers of the presidency.

Terrorist Awlaki needed to go, no doubt. We need to think, however, about the fact that Jay Carney et. al. weren't prepared for the question Tapper posed here. To assassinate someone who was considered an American citizen and feel like you wouldn't have to give an answer to the American public is the pinnacle of arrogance.

Whether or not this creature is or was an American citizen, and whether his killing was justified by the threat he posed, there's another question that I believe needs to be asked.

Did the United States declare war on Yemen and it wasn't reported in the media?

Yeah, I know, President George W. Bush declared a "world-wide war on terror" and that got a lot of attention at the time. But what are the implications as far as national sovereignty, international law, and America's liability for collateral damage resulting from occasional mistargeting? (You all remember the accidental bombing of a Chinese embassy during one of Clinton's wag-the-dog wars, don't you?)

Let's reverse the scenario just to get a different perspective. Say the Russians have been seeking a terrorist implicated in the Beslan school massacre. He has been located to a place within the United States by the KGB's successor agency. Let's say he's holed up in Dearborn, Michigan. Yeah, Dearborn, not Detroit.

Now, the Russians dearly want this cretin dead for what he did a little over seven years ago. However, knowing the U.S. is going a little soft on aiding the Kremlin in their reprisals against Chechnyan rebels, and knowing 0bama is not very trustworthy, the Russians launch a clandestine hit on Dearborn to remove the terrorist from the face of the earth. It could be a bomb, a missile or a CD agent, it doesn't matter.

Now, is this attack justified? Should the United States retaliate or let it go? Russian never gave warning, never declared war. They just took action where they wanted to take out a terrorist.

This may not be hugh, but it could be series. Nuke series.

Being he was wanted dead or alive after the indictment I don't see anything wrong with this killing.

Oops, there was no indictment.

Even Bin Laden was indicted and he wasn't even an American Citizen.

I’m glad the guy is dead but in all actuality, he should have been extradited from where he was, charged with whatever crimes he’s suspected of, put on trial, and executed if found guilty. He was an American citizen, not a foreigner. We are a nation of laws with a justice system for our citizens, and the government doesn’t have the right to kill someone just because they don’t like them.
