Inslee: Ready to ‘rumble’ with the Tea Party(That's just meanspirited)

He didn’t break into song, but Rep. Jay Inslee otherwise sounded like a character in “West Side Story” as he excoriated young supporters during a Thursday fundraiser at Nabob on Queen Anne Hill.

“It is time to get out on that field of battle with the Tea Party: It is time to stop rumbling with ourselves and start rumbling with the Tea Party,” said the gubernatorial hopeful.

Inslee has sought to tie GOP Attorney General Rob McKenna, his all-but-certain 2012 opponent, to the Tea Party: Polls show rising public disapproval of the right-wing movement.

Inslee was ready to rumble with a lot of liberal devil figures at the Queen Anne bar.

Voters should “not let Karl Rove govern the state of Washington,” he said. Rove is coming here to address State Republicans’ fall dinner on October 18th.

“I hope you’re going to give him a hot reception,” said Inslee. (The congressman did not define what he meant by a “hot reception” or “rumbling.”)

An Inslee fundraising letter has charged that Rove is coming out to raise money for negative advertising against him. He has also charged that Texas Gov. Rick Perry is gunning for him.

“I can tell you, in this election, I’m going to be attacked with millions of dollars of oil money coming from Texas,” Inslee told his fundraiser. He predicted that anti-Inslee money will even be “funneled through Saudi Arabia.”

Washington State Republican Chairman Kirby Wilbur has reacted with amusement to the anti-Perry, anti-Rove barrage.

He brought it up in a phone call with Perry, Wilbur related in an e-mail, only to have the Texas governor ask: “Jay who?”

“I can assure you that not a single penny of the money we raise on October 18th will be used in negative Inslee ads,” said Wilbur. “We have other priorities for that money and he seems to be doing well enough in hurting himself that we won’t need to use that money for that.

“I can’t say that negative ads won’t come later, and I can’t speak for other non-party groups, but not a single penny of the October 18th money will be used to demonize Jay.”

Wilbur mused that Inslee keeps talking about Karl Rove and Rick Perry and the Koch brothers. “When will he, as a candidate for governor, start talking about state issues? Like the budget, the special session, dealing with the state unemployment rate, transportation, etc.,” asked the GOP chairman.

Inslee has also taken to likening McKenna to Wisconsin’s union-busting Gov. Scott Walker. Walker was “a camouflaged candidate” who disguised his intentions while running last year. “We are not going to let a camouflaged candidate get into office in Washington,” he told supporters.

The gloves are off and the election is still 13 months off.
