D-Day For Green Energy Loan Guarantees As Another Solar Firm Files For Bankruptcy

Update: The U.S. Department of Energy has just announced it has finalized $2.1 billion in loan guarantees for two First Solar photovoltaic power plant projects in California. And First Solar just announced it has sold the 550-megawatt Desert Sunlight project, which received a $1.46 billion loan guarantee to NextEra Energy Resources and GE Energy Financial Services.

This is D-Day for First Solar and other renewable energy developers counting on billions of dollars in federal loan guarantees.

In a matter of hours, the deadline for the United States Department of Energy to finalize those loans will pass. And as the clock ticks down, another solar pioneer, Stirling Energy Systems, has filed for bankruptcy. More on that in a bit.

The stakes are particular high for First Solar, which is depending on loan guarantee offers of $2.6 billion to help finance two photovoltaic power plants, as well as for California utilities Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison, which are counting on the 780 megawatts to be generated by the projects to help them meet a state mandate to obtain a third of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020.

Can someone please tell me why I have to keep subsidizing more companies in a failed industry while the cost to produce electricity via gas and oil keep coming down.....

I’ve got an idea....

Warren Buffett wants to pay more taxes.

The Federal Gov’t needs money to pay for Steven Chu’s absurd fantasies.

I see a match here.

More proof that Obama’s funding (at our expense) of these phony companies is political payback to his cronies and campaign supporters.

There is so much inbreeding between all of these “green energy” companies and Obama, it isn’t surprising that we are getting nothing but bankrupt nutcases for our tax dollars!

The cost of the panels, whether produced in the USA or China is immaterial .

This entire industry, much like globull warming can only succeed with government mandates.

The people will pay more for energy produced by wind, solar, ethanol and the only way for these companies to exist is via subsidizes or mandates or both.

In a free market, the only windmills would be home made and pumping water in the plains states, the solar panels would be a novelty being used by eco-freaks and ethanol would be used for getting stoned.

This is why taxes MUST go up - to cover Barry’s call on his venture capital failures....and to punish the rich.

I agree. I believe that the unions basically "launder" money for the Democratic party; and, it looks like the "green" energy people seem to be doing the same.

I was listening, about a week ago, to someone on Fox describing what had been going on with Solyndra; and, I felt like I had heard something similar before. And, then it dawned on me, the "tech bubble" producing a prior recession. I remember that there were "companies" that were nothing more than a p.o. box, and were "producing" nothing. Finally, the whole thing imploded and sent us into a recession. I think the Obama administration is creating a "green bubble" and cronies are benefitting.

Because "costs going down" is not the goal.

It is A matter of faith. The
Moonbat faith requires no more war and an end to the use of fozsilfis

That means green, regardless of cost. Nothing else matters
