Texas Gov. Rick Perry is defending his policy of allowing tuition assistance for illegal immigrants at state colleges and universities, saying the lack of a cohesive federal immigration policy forced his hand.

One of the few tools that states are allowed to use is E-Verify, but Perry doesn’t like it. It would put too many of his followers out of a job.
Perry touted all the jobs Texas has created even though 81 percent of the jobs created since 2007 in Texas have gone to immigrants who arrived here since 2007. Ninety-three percent of these immigrants aren’t citizens and an estimated 50 percent are illegal aliens while the percentage of Americans in Texas holding jobs fell from 71 percent in 2007 to 67 percent in 2011.

I am just trying to point out how poorly Perry is handling the issue, Romney can be attacked on this in about 100 different ways, but Perry is just letting him get away with positioning himself to the right of Perry, which is just freaking crazy.
To me this would be like Romney accusing Perry of being soft on crime... and getting away with it!

They file an affidavit where they say they WILL apply for legal residence, as soon as that is possible (which is as soon as the federal government creates a way for those here illegally, to be here legally). That's the extent of the "work toward citizenship" they are required to undertake.

Incidentally, the enrollment (as noted above) of students in colleges and universities in Texas is 1.3 Million, that's almost double the population of the state of Alaska.

...the in-state tuition debate isn’t really about tuition at all — it’s about amnesty. First of all, the “DREAM Act” moniker is borrowed from proposed federal legislation which would have legalized certain illegal aliens brought here before their 16th birthday — an amnesty, in other words. The state-level “DREAM Acts” are just efforts at creating momentum and awareness for the amnesty legislation.
The problem with this, of course, is that once they graduate with this taxpayer-subsidized education, they’re still illegal aliens and so it’s illegal to hire them. (The stuff about “pursuing citizenship” is meaningless chaff — there’s no such thing for people in this situation.) They’re not going to “make our country better” or “go on to create money for the economy” or be “contributing members in the state of Texas” if they’re still illegal aliens.

Now, maybe there’s an argument to be made for legalizing certain illegal aliens brought here at a very young age whose identities were formed here and who know no other country. Actually, I’ve made that very argument many times. But if we’re going to debate amnesty for people in this situation, then let’s debate amnesty. Arguing for in-state tuition for illegal aliens without making plain that the real objective is legal status is incomplete at best, dishonest at worst.

The Dream Act(s) have a carrot (resident tuition) but also a stick- parents must prove they lived in state, kids went to schools in state, and parents paid state taxes)
and students must agree to register.
Now- which party and candidate more likely to enforce the stick part?
And no, Cain and Bachmann are not going to round up and deport millions of people. No one is.

I respect your right to defend Perry but it does not help his cause if your only defense of him is to attack another candidate. I will never support Perry because of his stance on illegal immigration nor Romney for his stance on Romneycare.
