Dick Durbin: We, er, don’t have the votes in the Senate to pass Obama’s jobs bill
Hotair ^ | 09/29/2011 | Allahpundit

Note well: It’s not because of a GOP filibuster either.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said that, at the moment, Democrats don’t have the votes to pass President Obama’s jobs bill, but Durbin added that that would change.

“Not at the moment, I don’t think we do but, uh, we can work on it,” Durbin said according to Chicago radio station WLS…

“The oil-producing state senators don’t like eliminating or reducing the subsidy for oil companies, “Durbin said. “There are some senators who are up for election who say I’m never gonna vote for a tax increase while I’m up for election, even on the wealthiest people. So, we’re not gonna have 100% Democratic senators. That’s why it needs to be bi-partisan and I hope we can find some Republicans who will join us to make it happen.”

Is this news? We knew on Sept. 14 that Democrats were leery of the bill when Reid insisted that they had other business to handle before taking it up. Two days later, we found out that Senate Democrats spent an hour and a half griping about the bill to White House aides in a meeting. Five Democrats — Begich, Webb, Landrieu, Mikulski, and Casey — were specifically named as opponents. Three days after that, Durbin told CNN not to expect any action on it until October at the earliest, a prediction that’ll end up being proved right. To the extent that his latest comments are “news,” it’s for two reasons. One: Despite having had two weeks to convince his own party’s congressional caucus to rally behind him on this extremely prominent measure, Obama’s still up shinola creek. That’s what happens when your job approval trend lines look like this. Two: We all realize, I hope, that the bill is chiefly a political ploy designed to show The One being proactive on the seminal electoral issue of the day. He expects Republicans to block it, at which point he’ll turn around and blame our endless economic malaise on the GOP. That’s perfectly straightforward — except that he forgot to craft the bill to make sure that it would attract the support of Democrats at least, which is essential if he wants to frame opposition to it as blind wingnut partisanship. I’m as confused as Dave in Texas is about that. If you want to isolate Republican obstructionism as America’s big problem, you should probably first double-check with your own guys to make sure they’re not being obstructionist too, huh?

Brand new from Fox News tonight: A clear majority of voters (52/38) say that if Obama were CEO of a company, he’d have been fired by now. I can’t imagine why.

the pro homo, pro cross dressing liberal biased media tells us zero is smart, smart in what for heavens sake the man is an idiot.

Dems are saying we don’t want your bill, you bill failed last time like your budget and yet you still keep saying it is the GOP not passing it and playing politics.

We need some people to be at his idiot speeches to address him and correct him on a lot of things.

The man is a complete embarrassment to the left and to think this corrupt media propped him up as if he was a king with the Rome pillars.

what’s the betting he got F’s while in his affirmative action college grades too.

I don’t know where they get these figures from; I know some former Obama supporters, and his approval rating HAS TO BE below 25%. If there was any truth to the smaller margin, he would NOT have produced such a string of failures at the ballot box, starting in NJ & MA in 2009 and continuing through the mid-term disaster right into the loss of Schumer’s former House seat. If this is what is happening in states he WON, what is happening on the national level?

25% tops...

I would have fired him in the first week.... just for lying to me. But I would have never hired him in the first place.

Mention Obama’s name to anyone I know or who lives anywhere near me and all you hear is profanity; 4-letter profanity. I’ll let you use your imagination.

He’s loathed and despised beyond words. His poll numbers have to be in the teens by now.

Have a GOP senator introduce it and let’s see if Reid blocks it. As zero has said in the past “I don’t want anyone to call MY bluff”

BUT Zero and his propagandists in the media will still blame the GOP for being obstructionists, never mind they can't even get their own party to vote for it. As long as the GOP won't vote for it, the RATS have their bumbper sticker for 2012 elections. That is if the 2012 election is not cancelled, as Bev Perdue (Gov D, NC)suggests.

I completely agree, if I didn't hear the occasional liberal moron on talk radio who still professes to love honor and respect obozo, I would never hear anyone say they liked him.

Did Durbin go and 'give away the store' with that line? Is he saying that the jobs bill is really a tax bill in disguise?

The oil-producing state senators don’t like eliminating or reducing the subsidy for oil companies, “Durbin said.
If the subsidies are gone or reduced the oil companies have to pay more of their own money to cover that expense. It's a tax increase.

Am I loony or reading that right?

Gas prices are down 30 cents. Obama is playing the oil card.

By July next year, gas will be a buck fifty a gallon and the media is going to praise Obama for his work in taking on big oil and winning.

Everything else is just smoke.

Without having heard Levin’s take yet, I’ll bet some of the no votes on this non-jobs “jobs” bill belong to:

Amy Klobuchar, Claire McCaskill, Jim Webb, Sherrod Brown, Sheldon Whitehouse, Ben Cardin, Jon Tester, and Bob Casey.

Trivia time: what do these eight people have in common?

Just how is FUBO going to accomplish that feat? If gas gets to $1.50 next summer, no one in the world is going to have a job because the only way oil goes down that much is if demand crashes.

At first I thought that maybe they were all lawyers, but I think there’s two or three on the list that aren’t. I believe that they are more moderate demorcrates and know the impact of this piece of garbage.

I agree, and I live in an area he carried easily; the reaction is often the same, and NOBODY (except the public school teachers that weren’t laid off) is better off than, or even in the same position as, three years ago.
