Kosovar Serbs Contemplate Life Under Albanian Rule
The New York Times ^ | September 29, 2011 | Matthew Brunwasser

NORTH MITROVICA, KOSOVO — Angry Serbs are still at the barricades here, blocking roads across northern Kosovo in an attempt to resist the recent deployment of police and customs officers from the Kosovar government to border crossings with Serbia.

Although the protests have been peaceful so far, behind the anger a more fundamental issue is smoldering: Serbs here are being forced to finally contemplate a future under the Kosovar government in Pristina, which is dominated by ethnic Albanians.

“It’s the very first time in 12 years that the pressure against the Serbs in the north has been so strong from both Pristina and the international community,” said Tatjana Lazarevic, 41, a native of Mitrovica who is a project manager at a private organization here. “And while at the same time, the support from Belgrade is weakening.”

Indeed, the government in Belgrade is facing new international pressure to finally dismantle the institutions, financed and governed by Serbia since the 1999 war, that have allowed Serbs in northern Kosovo to live separately from the dictates of the government in Pristina.

Serbia must “dismantle the parallel structures” it maintains in north Kosovo if it wants to join the European Union, Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, said in Belgrade last month.

While the European Union does not require Serbia to recognize Kosovar statehood — several current E.U. members do not — it does expect candidates to have normal relations with neighbors. Cutting off Serbian institutions in northern Kosovo is seen as a key to that.

Kosovo can’t ever unite with Albania. To do so would be completely hypocritical, and the Croats and Serbs would be likely partition Bosnia in response. Not that Bosnia is a functioning state to begin with...

serbs had their land and country taken away from them when they tried to take it back Clinton attacked the serbs and christianna ammanpour was on the Albanian border telling a bunch of lies and showing how the ethnics were being forced while ignoring the plight of the serbs.

I hope the serbs take their land back and drive these thieves back to the sea.

if Kosovo was permitted to secede from Serbia, so northern Kosovo should be permitted to secede from Kosovo.

Million dollar question....they should have been allowed to secede from Bosnia, too

Ah Croatia actually recognized Kosovo as an independent country, they are not that likely to weep over what happens to a bunch of Serbians stuck in Kosovo.

Again if the Serbians had spend half the energy they used against the Bosniaks or the Croatians against the Albanians, they’d have kept Kosovo.

Agreed. NATO was needed during the Cold War but now it has evolved into being a bully for the UN and the New World Order. We need to get out of NATO now. We, the U.S., backed the wrong dog in this fight.

agreed waging war against the Serbs who were trying to get their land back and get rid of radical muslims was disgusting.

Clinton wanted a diversion much like bozo the clown will use the death of this loony muslims today to divert attention away from his green corruption, fast and furious and the economy

The pro queer, cross dressing biased, corrupt media will make sure of this I’m sure

Incorrect assertion, during the Bosnian war NATO was not bombing Belgrade and Serbia proper.

I’m not quite sure of the depth of knowledge you have concerning this subject matter but there is much more to this than what you are positing.

As far as Croatia is concerned, she is as she has always been, a German puppet.

“To do so would be completely hypocritical, and the Croats and Serbs would be likely partition Bosnia in response.”

The Serbs and Croats of Bosnia have already made it known that that is precisely what their intention is.
