Perry apologizes for 'heartless' comment on immigration question (text and Video)

Rick Perry said Wednesday that he was sorry for saying at last week's Republican debate that those opposed to providing an in-state tuition break to the children of illegal immigrants "did not have a heart."

“I was probably a bit over-passionate by using that word and it was inappropriate,” Perry said in a interview with Newsmax. “In Texas in 2001 we had 181 members of the legislature — only four voted against this piece of legislation — because it wasn’t about immigration it was about education.”

But Perry stood by his argument that building a fence along the entire Mexican border was unwise. The Texas governor said that the fence would likely be expensive, ineffective and violate the property rights of those who owned land on the border.

“In the metropolitan areas where the fencing actually can play a positive role, absolutely,” he said. “But you have to have boots on the ground … having an obstacle without observation is no obstacle at all. So just the idea of building a fence and saying, ‘That will take care of it, let’s just build a fence,’ has never worked in the history of mankind.”

Thanks for the apology, Rick. I apologize for never voting for you.

I guess gun rights and right to life aren’t at the top of the requirement list for conservatives anymore.

If prisoners had the resources like shovel, ladders and were unsupervised, the fence wouldn’t do much at all over just a short time.

This answer is perfectly fine. As long as a very comprehensive border control strategy is part of his platform, that is a-ok with me. A fence across all of Texas makes little practical sense, as it would block a major natural resource from our country and cede the entire Rio Grande to Mexico. Lack of border control would be a major problem in a candidate, but under Perry Texas has invested heavily in increased border patrol, so I don’t think that is likely.

I guess not

abortion doesn’t seem to matter
gun rights doesn’t seem to matter
gay marriage doesn’t seem to matter
government healthcare doesn’t seem to matter
liberal supreme court nominees doesn’t seem to matter.

only vacinations for cancer, and in-state tuition rates matter!

What? Clinton?

Just because Perry is also a 3 term southern governor who promised he would serve out his term and not run for president but then ran for president anyway?

Or is that they both got rich from highly questionable real estate deals involving their donors and surrogates once in office?

You couldn’t possibly mean their tax payer funded slush funds used to pay off political supporters?

I just don’t see the connection.

The "heartless" comment was a major political blunder, and I say that as someone who supports Perry (especially over Romney). I'm not sure if an apology undoes any of the damage, but it needed to be made.

As for the fence, I am 100% in agreement with him. It is a "feel good" solution that will cost millions, if not billions, and will not solve the problem of illegal immigration. I hope he holds firm in his opposition to that one.

Well, apparently you did not watch the video, if you did not find his answer.

You're not by any chance a professional logistician? You may qualify for disability.

Please tell us his answer.

You are exactly right!

Everybody on FR who isn’t queer for Perry must be a Romney supporter!

You figured it out! Amazing!

What? Clinton?

He's slick like Clinton, or tries to be, and some mannerisms and speech patterns. Others on here have also made the observation. It's more style and political tactics than specific policy positions.

It is impossible to stuff toothpaste back into the tube.
Many have tried.
All have failed.

Perry said critics were heartless because he meant it.
He isn’t sorry he has those sentiments.
He is sorry he got called on his comment.

He isn’t sorry he signed the Texas Dream Act.
He is sorry he got cornered defending it.

The Texas governor said that the fence would likely be expensive, ineffective and violate the property rights of those who owned land on the border.

Perry has no sense of when to shut up and how to answer a question. Never had to deal with the fallout in Texas but on the national level it is a fact and he’s failing.

“... and violate the property rights of those who owned land on the border.”

That is true regarding land owned whether it’s on the border or in some rural or heavily populated area. How does he think things get built such as roads, utilities, buildings, gov’t facilities, etc. The guy just doesn’t seem to have the ability to keep his foot out of his mouth.

You are correct that the unfortunate side effect of Perry's destruction is the greatly enhanced likelihood Romney will be our nominee.

That is a thought I cannot stand. I'd like to either see (a) Perry put things back together and re-emerge as a strong front-runner or (b) Cain attract lots of dollars and run an aggressive, yet disciplined, campaign from here on out.

I have my doubts about either one of those actually occurring. I can't strike the idea that things have once again played out the way the elite had planned all along and that their man Mitt will be our standard bearer come November 2012.

I was being sarcastic, he has, unfortunately, many similarities to Clinton when it comes to political tactics.

I hope he holds firm in his opposition to that one.(the border fence)

I hope Perry's position is moot by election time.

I am not bent out of shape about his “heartless” comment so his apology doesn’t move me one way or the other.

My objection is completely focused on the policy he tried to justify with that comment.

Perry has fizzled out. Cain is looking better every day.
