Newton mayor Setti Warren, whose US Senate campaign has been short on cash and eclipsed by the emergence of Elizabeth Warren, plans to announce tomorrow that he is dropping out, according to an early supporter who received a phone call this afternoon.
Setti Warren was initially seen as a potential front-runner. He had worked for US Senator John Kerry and made an impressive initial run for public office in winning Newtons top job in 2009.
But many in Newton questioned whether he was running too soon after being elected mayor. And he had trouble raising money.
As of the most recent campaign finance filing deadline, at the end of June, his campaign was in debt.
The next campaign deadline is Friday and political insiders were eager to see if he could recover.
Elizabeth Warren, meanwhile, has stolen the spotlight since she entered the race this month, capturing attention from the Democratic establishment figures Setti Warren had been courting.
Meanwhile, other members of the Democratic field have said they intend to stay in the race in hopes of facing off against Republican Scott Brown..

>>Consummate Beltway insider and Obama mastermind David Axelrod yesterday all but crowned Elizabeth Warren the U.S. Senate Democratic nominee nearly a year before Massachusetts voters get to decide for themselves prompting howls of protest from fellow Senate contenders who told the White House to butt out of Bay State politics.
This is whats wrong with Washington, said City Year co-founder Alan Khazeis spokesman Scott Ferson. For hundreds of years, Massachusetts has been publicly electing its state senators and doing a pretty good job.
Senate hopeful and Somerville activist Bob Massie called Axelrods plug of Warren a Harvard Law professor and former Obama administration official part of what he characterized as a brazen White House move to bypass local voters.
“Meanwhile, other members of the Democratic field have said they intend to stay in the race in hopes of facing off against Republican Scott Brown”..
...no major loss. I’d almost prefer he loses. At least with the admitted Marxists in MA we know what we’re getting.
Looks as if it’ll end up being another of those races where you get to vote for Bad, Worse, or Worst.

Looks like You Lie Obama is learning the techniques for the former Speaker of The House, yep, that’s right, Robo-Represenative Porky Pelosi.
At the very least we could use him for procedural moves. We need to try to get the votes from other seats if Brown won’t come around (and he might come around more once he wins a full 6 year term, you never know). I can’t say I like the idea of intentionally kicking an R out of the Senate at this point in time.
having two Warrens on the ballot would have totally screwed the plans of the puppetemasters
That woulda been a tough call in the Democrat primary... Black Stalinist Warren vs. White Stalinist Warren. Who to choose, who to choose ?
“None of the above”
Well, I think what it amounts to is that Scott will not get all those donations he received last time from out-of-state conservatives. Quite a few Freepers said they sent him money.
And I certainly wouldn’t give him a dime now. There are better things to spend the money on. But, if I lived in Mass., I’d probably vote for him over the alternative.
He has built up quite a warchest though and keep in mind
some moderates may send him money even if conservatives don’t.
Are there more moderates (and liberals) in MA than
conservatives? Check out the results of the last election.
Other than some pickups in the state legislature, the GOP
got creamed. Even with promising candidates. This is MA.
I think he pledged to serve only a term or two (whether or not he breaks that pledge like Cong. Meehan did I don’t know, though for now I trust him). When that happens barring any fresh young GOP talent coming to succeed him, the seat will fall back into the hands of the mooooooooooooooooonbats.
Check out the recent statement by Brown about immigration and his supposed positions on many issues. I don’t know if I’d call that bad. Considering this is Massachusetts, he is an arch-conservative by comparison to the uber-moonbats in Kennedy Country.
Too bad, I was looking forward to all the SETI (search for extraterrestrial intelligence) jokes.
I was thinking of that too!
They are thinking it would be a good gimmick to have a female candidate take the Dem nomination this time (like last time).
Setti Warren btw would not have been the first black to have a US Senate seat in MA. Remember Ed Brooke—GOP, the anti-
slavery party.
