[Mexico:]Grenade attacks throughout Tamaulipas; shootouts reported
The Brownsville Herald/ Monitor | September 27, 2011

One of the most violent days recently in northern Tamaulipas took place Tuesday as one large firefight broke out in Matamoros, another firefight took place in Rio Bravo, and various grenade attacks occurred in Reynosa, Ciudad Victoria and Rio Bravo.

In Matamoros, fighting broke out about 5 p.m. near the intersection of Cuauhtémoc Avenue and Calle Doce. Soon after, another fight broke out along Calle Sexta near the intersection with Canales Avenue. The fighting soon moved to the San Francisco neighborhood, where it reportedly lasted close to 30 minutes. The fighting allegedly took place between two groups of gunmen, with Mexican authorities arriving shortly after to make it a three-way fight.

As the fighting continued, gunmen set up road blocks along the city’s main streets to interfere with the deployment of Mexican troops.

Cameron County officials confirmed that Veterans International Bridge was temporarily closed as a result of the situation in Matamoros.

The Twitter and Facebook account used by the city of Matamoros to warn about violent incidents didn’t issue any alerts. However the U.S. Consulate in Matamoros issued a warning regarding the firefight, which it said occurred between 5:45 and 7:15 p.m.

“During that time heavy gunfire was reported in different locations in Matamoros including the downtown area,” the document said.

The warning advised U.S. citizens to avoid unnecessary travel in the city.

Tamaulipas authorities issued a new release confirming the grenade attacks and condemning all forms of violence.

In Rio Bravo, official figures have not been released regarding the total number of injured or dead, but officials confirmed two dead in the shootout.

The encounter came Tuesday afternoon about 3 p.m., shortly after a group of men in an SUV threw a grenade at the Azteca movie theater along Madero Avenue, seriously injuring one person. Soon after the first attack, a second grenade was thrown at the Tamaulipas State Police building along Independence Street; no injuries were reported. The shootout took place shortly after the two attacks between Mexican authorities and gunmen.

About an hour later in Reynosa, three different grenade attacks were reported without any injuries. One of the grenades was thrown at a nightclub called Dubai along Seventh Street. A second device was thrown at a hair salon next to Guadalupe Victoria Elementary School in the Mil Cumbres Dos neighborhood.

The third grenade attack took place in the Casa Bella neighborhood.

The Twitter and Facebook account used by the Reynosa city government to warn about violent incidents didn’t issue any alerts but invited the public to various cultural activities.

On Monday night, two different grenades went off one in the Gallo De Oro bar in the Rodriguez neighborhood and another in the Cadillac Bar in the downtown area. At the Gallo De Oro bar, one man by the name of Enrique Valdez Martinez was killed by the blast and seven other patrons were injured.

In the state capital, Ciudad Victoria, two grenades were thrown at a Federal Electric Commission warehouse along Luis Caballero Avenue, causing damage to electronic equipment inside.

I believe that much of this violence would come to a screeching halt if the Mexican citizens were allowed to own firearms.

You think the Mex Fed Gov would be in an all out war with these thugs before now, instead they trickle in after an hour or two. Can not imagine anyone with 2 braincells going tourist in Mexico.

If this were in Africa, the UN blue helmets would be sent to quiet things and rape the women.

The way this is going we are going to see Abram tanks down there.

Too late! They may already be there, though the Mexican Army largely prefers wheeled armored vehicles:

in early 2008, a set of 12 M1A2 was ordered by the Mexican government led by Felipe Calderon to the US Foreign Military Sales Dept. and are expected to be shipped in by Early september 2008 to couple with the Independence day of Mexico. It has a combat weight of 57,160 kg with a maximum road speed of 67km/h, a 120 mm. cannon with APDSF-T rounds along with DU round capability. movement sensors and high-tech tracking/nightvision/firing device (EMES-17 used in the Leopard 2 German Tanks)and anti-mine devices along special amphibious devices to match with the sub-tropical ground. This vehicle is expected to be used only in case of a full-state war (DN-1) with a foreign country.

The Mexican Army works around three preparedness missions, or plans:

•DN1: Preparation of the military forces to repel external aggressions. No military armed force can leave Mexican territory without a declaration of war, and approval of the Congress. The last time this was invoked was in 1942, to send an expeditionary force to the Philippines, after war was declared against Germany and Japan, following the sinking of two Mexican ships by U-boats. In 1990 President Carlos Salinas de Gortari asked the permission of the Congress to send troops to the Gulf War, but it was refused, since there was no declaration of war against Iraq.

•DN2: Preparation of the military forces to protect the internal security of the country. This would include police actions against guerrilla forces, counter-drug operations, and, originally, political control. Up to 1970, the Mexican Army had been used as a repressive force to maintain the virtual dictatorship of the single-party PRI government. The most controversial use of the military had been called "The dirty war" in the 1960s, which included the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre of students and unexpecting bystanders. After 1980 these types of operations had nearly completely ceased (see EZLN).

•DN3: Defense against natural disasters. The Army should always be ready to help the civil population in case of disaster. This include preventive measures. For example, between August and November, military forces are sent to Mexican coastal areas to aid the public in the event of hurricanes or floods. For the Mexican people, the DN3 plan is the most important peacetime operation of the Army. The Army provides food, shelter, medicine, and medical services to the people that need them. This also includes reconstruction of roads and communication services. Because calling the implementation DN3 plan is an acceptance of severe problems, the DN3 plan was not invoked in the 1985 Mexico City earthquake that left large areas of Mexico City in ruins, since the authorities did not want to recognize there was an emergency in the capital, while the army was called to the city, it was just a a peacekeeping force. This latter became a severe questioning on the government. Also, the Mexican Army provided aid to the US when the hurricanes Katrina and Rita occurred to help the people in need.

Right. A dozen automatic AK47s throwing a lead curtain and some peasant's going to whip out a 38 Special and kill em off.

A smart GOP candidate would note the monstrous lack of action by the Mexican Government with regards to this violence and demand they get their house in order or threaten to invade like we did in the 1850's.

Nothing else will gin up the base like a promise to invade Mexico and get them back in line.

It's a national security thing.

The Mex Fed Gov has never been able to control anything outside of Mexico City.

One of the reasons we invaded 150 years ago.

Thanks for the ping, I saw this news earlier on El Blog Del Narco or Bordeland Beat or one of those - things are really heating up down Matomoros way. The narcotraficante’s strategy to control one county deep into the USA is being driven by the Mexican government forces joining in the gang rivalry shoot outs. Soon the rivals will be having their shoot outs in Texas border counties, so who is going to interfere with that? The sherif? TX Rangers? Certainly not Omarxist.

Last time in District Federale, they were having some southern uprising and the Federales were everywhere with M-16s. Was walking in Zona Rosa and one of them decided to pop off a few rounds into a flowerbed, I guess to see if would actually shoot. Quite unnerving.

Their people are not that wild, can not figure out why they can’t get a handle on the country. Suppose they just want the taxes, don’t worry about the rest.

My fav was Ma Crosby’s in Acuna.
Yes, those were some crazy times. Its amazing we lived through them. Gone now, its 100% suicidal these days.

There’s a Cadillac Bar and Grill with “that” Mexican flavor in Shreveport, its pretty good, but not the same.
