I don't know the rate today but when my grandson signed up the failure rate for prospective recruits was close to 50%. The military doesn't need to go looking for potential problems

Our young people in service are very much for the most part bright and well motivated, it's not a dumping ground for misfits, not yet, anyway.

Bright and motivated ... yep, that fits all of our friends, neighbors and kin-folk in the military.

I wonder if some of the lower-income groups have trouble meeting fitness and education requirements.
