"Every winner of Florida's Presidency 5 straw poll has gone on to win the GOP nomination. And if that tradition continues this year, Herman Cain will be the Republican nominee in 2012. He overwhelmingly won the straw poll, nabbing 37 percent of the votes. That put Cain more than 20 percentage points ahead of Rick Perry (15 percent) and Mitt Romney (14 percent). Many of the straw poll delegates expressed frustration at [Perry's] poor debate performance Thursday night, along with irritation at his immigration positions." National Review Online, Sept. 24, 2011

The mainstream media are desperately attempting to gloss over the real reason that Rick Perry self-imploded at the Florida straw poll. It wasn't that his debate performance was poor, although it certainly was. The reason Rick Perry is imitating Fred Thompson's rapid decline from favored frontrunner to candidate-in-crisis is because the debate revealed the depths to which his pro-immigration position runs counter to that of most Republicans.
The various myths about Ellis Island notwithstanding, the American people have always been moderately anti-immigration. While their political elite has studiously labored to replace them with a new and more dependent people for the last 50 years, Americans have never accepted the general concept of open immigration from around the world. More importantly, they know they have been lied to from the very beginning by the advocates of immigration, and they understand that neither the Democratic nor the Republican Party can be trusted to defend their interests versus the interests of the corporations that seek the ever-lower wage rates that come with the expansion of the labor supply.
However, this American distaste for mass immigration was somewhat concealed by the credit-driven real-estate boom of the previous 20 years.

The author makes what I personally think is an astute observation ( for those who are crying out for another GOP savior ) :
“Republicans are foolish to think that other alternatives to Rick Perry are any more palatable than the Tex-Mexican governor. Gov. Christie is no solution because he is arguably worse on immigration than Perry, as is Mitt Romney.
I am no fan of Herman Cain and his Federal Reserve connections, but if he is astute enough to ride the anti-immigration wave that Rick Perry inadvertently created at last week’s debate, he may have the potential to become a credible candidate for the nomination.”
IMHO, it wasn’t only the immigration issue that caused the decline. Conservatives are constantly called “racist, homophobes, sexists, haters of _______ (fill in the blank). To have someone running for the GOP candidate refer to individuals as heartless is angering. Conservatives take it on “the chin” in the media, by Democrats etc.. all the time. Most conservatives that I know accept that but won’t accept being called “heartless” by someone who wants OUR vote. Just a thought and opinion.
I actually think “heartless” hurt him worse than his position.
Anyone who was for obamacare and lax immigration policies are dead meat in the next election, at least as far as I’m concerned. I won’t let Mary Landrieu forget about her vote on Obamacare in 2014 when I believe she is up for reelection. I hear for the first time she is scared - as well she should be. Her party is toast in Louisiana and it’s about time!
Unless and until Palin gets in... Cain is my man!
LLS
I thought it was less his immigration stance and more that he thanked his supporters by giving them the “heartless bigot” label.
We can't get the kids in my hometown (Rochester, NY) to complete high school. Only about 40% are graduating. Disgusting and the UNION teachers are getting the big bucks.
Perry is opening a door for the kids who know that education is step one.
Pssssst....Texas isn't the only state that educates illegals. We don;t even ask here in NYS.
The illegals can go to college without being given discounts (someone is paying the difference somewhere along the line) or preferential treatment, which we know will come. American ctizens being passed over for illegals should become angry, government needs to put in its place.
RE: Unless and until Palin gets in... Cain is my man!
So, what’s Palin’s stance on illegal immigrants?
See here:
http://www.ontheissues.org/sarah_palin.htm
* Supports a path to citizenship, but no amnesty for illegals. (Oct 2008)
* Never supported Pat Buchanan for president. (Sep 2008)
Has not often expressed views on illegal immigration. (Aug 2008)
* Address jointly with Canada the border security challenges. (Jan 2007)
* Took no action on Alaskas sanctuary cities. (Sep 2006)
* Tightened restrictions on illegal aliens drivers licenses. (Sep 2006)

for her full quotes.
Just look at this :
Q: The state has seen big growth of minority and immigrant populations, specifically Latinos & Southeast Asians. What sort of outreach has your campaign done?
A: I have reached out to all these communities and asked them to identify their needs. Their response has been for more vocational training, senior assistance, ending gang violence, and more state outreach and communication with their communities. One of the key components of my internal campaign is a diversity task force. I turn to them often.
Source: Anchorage Daily News: 2006 gubernatorial candidate profile Oct 22, 2006
Lou Dobbs notes that at least two of Alaskas cities have been officially designated as sanctuary cities: An August 14, 2006 report produced by the Congressional Research Service listed 31 cities and counties that have dont ask, dont tell sanctuary policies in place. They [include] Anchorage, Alaska [and] Fairbanks, Alaska. Alaska and Oregon both have state-wide policies that forbid state agencies from using resources to enforce federal immigration law.
Apparently, this is by design from the highest levels. In fact, a resolution to that effect was passed in the Alaska state legislature in 2003 (before Palins
election): [Alaska] House Joint Resolution 22—May 2003: Establishes that state agencies and instrumentalities may not use state resources or institutions for the enforcement of federal immigration laws, which are the responsibility of the federal government.
Its not clear whether Gov. Palin has ever weighed in, pro or con, on Alaskas sanctuary policies.
He may as well have put on a Hillary, Pelosi or Di-Fi mask and said:
"It's For The Children"Perry's toast. And he did it to himself.
Yep. You nailed it.
Most candidate’s position would change if you had to prove you are a citizen to vote in national elections. Bring in your birth certificate and you can vote. No exceptions! Could Obama vote?
Amen.
Americans have had it w/ Perry-type touchy-feely government that has destroyed us as a culture....... Perry slipped up and gave us a glimpse of how he really feels about the rest of the nation.
By labeling "heartless" some 81% of Americans who disagree with in-state tuition, Perry thumbed his nose at his country and its citizens.....the same people he needs to vote for him. The inference was that only Perry is Truly Worthy b/c he sucks up to Mexico.
Perry's anti-intellectual approach doomed his chances---he talks first and thinks later. If you really want to be grossed out......read Perry's book.....find out what Perry's ghost writers really think Perry thinks.
Perry's got more swagger than smarts. (Just the thing neocons look for....an rank opportunist who can be easily duped. Trillion dollar invasions are dancing in n/c heads as we type).
The foreign invaders are the biggest issue to me. I’m waiting to see who has the courage and conviction to talk about border security and serious enforcement.
Another great observation:
“Many, if not most, Americans view the mass invasion of their country by Mexicans and others about as favorably as the citizens of Czechoslovakia, Holland and France viewed the mass immigration of Germans into their countries during the 1940s. The effects of this invasion are not something the political elite are able to hide behind platitudes or rejiggering the official size of the labor force because they are inescapable in the lives of those who don’t live in walled communities or summer in the Hamptons.”
Yup... many, many Americans are sick and tired of illegals. They (I) am tired of the money being cut from GT/Magnet/Special ed programs so the money can go to the illegal/children of illegals. The hospitals give services and get stiffed with the bill. We (I) am tired of reading time and time again about some girl/woman being raped by an illegal, or a family being wiped out in a DWI by an illegal. I am FOR legal immigration meaning you stand in line like everyone else and come into Our Country as a citizen. To be called “heartless” is beyond me... not when I want what is best for Our Country. I personally believe that Perry stepped into a whole pile of mess that can’t be easily scrubbed or forgotten.
