Rick Perry's campaign stuggles to explain straw poll loss

Reporting from Tampa, Fla. -- A black, threatening cloud hung low over the Orange County Convention Center on Saturday evening as top members of Gov. Rick Perry’s brain trust left a place their candidate would love to forget.

At best half showed up, leaving tables groaning with uneaten bagels, scrambled eggs, bacon and fruit cocktail. At the end of the governor’s rather perfunctory eight-minute speech, the breakfast crowd offered a rather perfunctory round of applause, the first public clue that all might not be going well in Perryville.

The Texan’s campaign fielded the largest cadre of volunteers and paid staff at the event. His staffers, wires dangling from their ears (a touch, and expense, that no other campaign matched), were very much in evidence Saturday inside the convention hall, as they distributed signs and buttonholed delegates. Another visible sign of the considerable investment Perry made in Florida: signage that included a huge banner, hanging in the foyer of the convention hall, which greeted the 3,000 delegates, starting on debate night; Perry’s campaign paid an undisclosed sum to the state party for the privilege.

There weren’t a lot of us Palin supporters on the board, after that Alaska radio show call-in fiasco, either...
There were a lot more Palin supporters NOT on the board getting sucked into it.

No Norm, I seriously don’t. I figure the people lurking can make up their own mind which one of us looks foolish. I’m not worried a bit.

He will figure out to talk about illegals, about vaccines, and Social Security. Each can be finessed, and explained

In other words he's a walking disaster.

That's probably an issue for folks who imagine viruses give a damned about politics.

They don't.

The Leftwingtards have the same vision ~ that it's the Catholic Church, through their prayers and beliefs that creates AIDS in homosexuals.

Viruses are viruses. Praise God for medicines that can combat them.

Really? If not him then who would be the nominee? If not him then it would be Romney, there is no other.

Democrats working to undercut Perry, Romney

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2783127/posts

...”, the race to negatively define Perry and Romney in voters’ minds is being driven by the Democratic National Committee and outside groups like Priorities USA and American Bridge... Most of the dirty work is being left to such groups,”

Editorial: Memo To GOP: The Foe Is Obama, Not Perry (Excellent Point!!!)

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2782952/posts

“Texas Gov. Rick Perry must have felt a bit like Gen. Custer at Little Big Horn at the Orlando debate, a made-for-TV contrivance in which those who have a real chance to be president must take pokes and jabs from those who don’t.

... we must understand that while the goal is the nomination, the prize is the White House. Lost in the brouhaha over tuition for illegal aliens and mandated vaccines is the fact we simply can’t afford four more years of President Obama.

Perry has given awkward responses. How can he debate the president, the whispers ask. Sound-bite debates in which you thrust and parry (no pun intended) with eight other candidates, as well as the pundits, are one thing. Comparing your job-creating pro-growth record in a booming state to the record of the arguably worst president in American history is something else.”

DUH, perry is the very definition of rino, the man became a republican when. It was obvious that he could not be governor for life as a democrap. No different than the backward flip of arlen spector.

I also think there will be a whole lot of Texans who won't forgive or forget what was done to Perry, and winning without Texas will be pretty hard too.

That's a good point, winning w/o Texas can be very hard.

Are you guys friggin' kidding me? The GOP Candidate will win Texas handily. (Pssst.... between us??? Perry dude is dumb.)

I have never seen a candidate who has blown such good fortune in such a brief period of time. As soon as Perry announced his candidacy, he quickly assumed the first place position in the polls and he seemed unbeatable. But then he opened his mouth and over the next 3 debates he went from bad to worse. He holds several positions that alienate conservatives, but his awful stance on in-state tuition for the children of illegals is a dagger straight to the heart of his campaign. However, he hasn't seemed to back down from that position, and he hasn't even made a convincing argument as to why this is a sound policy.

I think Cain’s win in the Florida straw poll is the result of a protest vote. Republicans in Florida seem to be fed up with Romney and Perry. They are giving Perry a vote of no confidence, but at the same time they aren't willing to make Romney the beneficiary of that dynamic. But judging from Bachmann’s 1% in the straw poll, and factoring in the performance of the other conservatives in the race (such as Santorum’s 10% and Gingrich’s 8% results), we know that conservatism alone wasn’t the only motivating force present in the results. By that standard, Bachmann’s 1% showing is beyond pitiful.

Cain’s win today tell us more about an angry GOP base that isn’t gonna take it anymore. No more Obama-like-talk or the so-called 'compassionate conservatism.' Republicans are hungry for problem solving candidates with practical solutions based on conservative principles, and neither Romney-the-flip-flopper nor Perry-the-big-heart can deliver.
