I don’t think this meme being floated that Perry’s problem was nothing more that being caught in “gotcha” questions in a “contrived” format and therefore he wasn’t as smooth as he needed to be is going to fly.
I think conservatives are unhappy with the substance of what Perry was saying, in particular on illegal immigration.
So, all the other primary candidates should just sit back and give the nomination to Perry? Now is the time to make sure Republicans pick the proper candidate who is battle tested. Once that candidate is nominated, then they can worry about defeating Obama.

And this has been the way it has ALWAYS been, from the inception of this nation. As a matter of fact, the broadsides and newspaper articles ( many written anonymously and many others PAID FOR, by one candidate or another using a hack hatchetman ), not to mention the vicious whispering campaigns, were not just about policies/views, but very personal swipes as well.
Thus far, not a single GOPer has gone after Newt and his abject moral failings, Romney and Huntsman's Mormonism, the gossip that once engulfed Santorum, when he was a Senator, etc.! So it's really been a pretty "clean" case of "sniping" which is a relatively bad use of the term "snipe", anyway.
The incumbent President has an advantage—he doesn’t have to agree to a debate with the challenger unless he wants to. Nixon never debated McGovern. It may be harder now to avoid a debate but the media will cover for Obama (just as they didn’t raise a fuss in 2008 when he decided not to go the public funding route). Would Obama be able to use teleprompters in a debate, if he did agree to one?
Nancy boy thinking like this make me wince. Are we going to have a legit competition amongst candidates for the nomination or a rose-petal path to coronation for the front-runner?
Perry was his only credible conservative challenger, and now that they have destroyed him, who is possibly going to stop Mitt? My guess is no one.

I was shocked at Perry’s lame performance last night. I now have eliminated him, MB, RP, and Huntsman. I’m having a difficult time coming to grips with the choices we have at this point.
It’s a debate. What do they expect? If Perry can’t face the heat, then he needs to get out of the kitchen. Do they think that Obama and the entire left wing press would be kinder to him in the general election?
And what’s all this business of blaming Sarah Palin for attacking Perry? She has nothing to do with it. It’s wrong to say that Perry is a poor candidate, with a RINO record, but it’s OK to attack Palin at every turn?
I liked the last paragraph about the circular firing squad. These certainly aren’t the Reaganesque candidates sniping at each other more than they are attacking Obama. Newt tried to suggest this a couple of debates ago, but no one has heeded. Oh well, what can we expect when people are involved. It is an imperfect exercise in an imperfect world.

She probably wins that. If she gets in now, it won’t be pretty. Her and Perry split the vote and we’ll get Romney. Even if she were to win, the mediawhores will continue to trash her. They’ll be absolutly NO attention paid to Obies pathetic record.

I swear to vote for whoever the GOP puts on the ticket for Nov 2012. Until then, I will listen and learn all I can about the candidates so I can give my input by way of my vote in the primaries. Unfortunately, objective and logical discussions about the current GOP candidates is no longer found at FR (at least in all the posts I've read lately).

So, IBD was fully invested in a Perry walkover, and now they're feeling the pain? Too bad. Bad night at the office.
I don't remember them crying foul when Ed Rollins took a karate chop at Sarah Palin, or lamenting that Herman Cain doesn't seem to be getting his props as an economically literate conservative. If they protested McGinniss's book or the smears on Bachmann's family life and faith, someone remind me now, quickly -- I missed IBD's support in adversity for these conservative Republicans.
I suspect they reserve their pain for Perry and Romney.
