Mark Steyn scolds Perry on illegal immigration: 'Cheap racism demagoguery'
Daily Caller ^ | September 23, 2011 | Jeff Poor

As the rest of the 2012 Republican presidential field ganged up on Texas Gov. Rick Perry during Thursday night’s GOP debate, illegal immigration was the evening’s hottest-button issue — particularly the granting of in-state tuition rates to children of illegal immigrants in Texas. Now Perry’s defense seems to have struck nerve with National Review columnist Mark Steyn.

Filling in for Rush Limbaugh on his radio program Friday, Steyn, the author of “After America: Get Ready for Armageddon,” took issue with Perry’s response to those attacks.

Rick Perry “has basically adopted the Democratic line now on the whole illegal immigration issue,” Steyn said. “He says that you know, if you want to demonize him for providing education to the children of illegal immigrants at in-state tuition rates, then you don’t have any heart. That’s a Democrat talking point.

This could be a problem for Perry. Not only does he sound like Bush on immigration, he sort of acts like him as well.

Bush called us Vigilantes.

McCain called us lazy.

Perry calls us heartless racists.

I am not sure yet who I will support in these primaries but I now know who I will NOT support.

The GOP field is hard at work clearing themselves out and making room for the arrival of Gov Palin.

Yes, I heard Steyn on Rush today. Good for him! We, the law-abiding citizens and taxpayers of the good ole USA don't have a heart? LOL! How about the criminals who enter our country illegally, where are their selfish and greedy hearts at? DON'T REWARD THEM!!

Poor you. All those names? Poor you. How’s do you function in political warfare, with all those delicate sensibilities? You, sir, have left your fox hole.

While I have liked PERRY to this point I find his stance on Illegal Immigration more and more troubling. In state tuition for children of illegals? No! His reasoning was absurd!. Don’t build a fence? - WRONG ANSWER! He says if you are against his positions on this you have no heart. I can get that crap from the Democrats. It’s not a matter of not having a heart. It’s a matter of disincentivising illegals from wanting to come or stay here. If you keep giving them benefits it just gives them a reason to stay. And you start them on the “path” to democrat voting rolls!

Make it so uncomfortable that they will leave on their own!

If they want to come in LEGALLY, then I welcome them!

I fear that if we lose Texas we will never win another election and Perry’s approach WILL cause us to eventually lose Texas!

I loved GWB but hated his stance on illegals, maybe it's because Texas has almost 10 million Latinos, probably half of whom are illegal.

Maybe Texas is so inundated with illegals that trying to deport them would result in another Alamo {or Waco} with the Mexicans being on the inside.

Well the ATF should be selling them weapons, just to make it a fair last stand.

“The GOP field is hard at work clearing themselves out and making room for the arrival of Gov Palin.”

Looks like you might be correct. These bozos in the debates seem to be making an effort to look bad to conservatives. Could Perry have said anything more stupid? Maybe it’s all part of A Bigger Plan.

Actually he is more to the left of Jorge on illegals, at least Jorge gave lip service to building a fence, and then threw away billions on delays. Perry's plan, is a bogus protect the border, while rewarding law breakers and paying their medical bills.

CW,

I repect you. You don’t attack people even when they richly deserve it. Even you have to admit that Perry severely damaged himself last night when he (again) publicly attacked a large portion of the electorate.

I don’t support Perry or Romney

I want a full fledged conservative, strong on the military, immigration the homosexual agenda, stop the social policies of the military and over turn zero’s don’t ask, I want fiscal and social conservatism not some half baked cop outs who say when the going gets tough.
It is states rights, no it isn’t when it is the queers.
Or a man who will say and do anything to get elected because he did not win 3 years ago

Perry had me until I heard more about him.

He even looks like Bush with his smirks when he is up on the podium

Immigration, illegal immigration, is probably the most important issue facing us today. It determines who is going to be the voting majority in 10 years.

I can not vote for a Perry who wants us to pay for illegals, and who will not build a wall.

Michelle Bachmann again said she would not give fee education to illegals, she would deport illegals, she would build a wall the entire length of the border, and she would hire enough border agents to patrol the wall.

...making room for the arrival of Gov Palin.

We have seen what happens when a candidate rolls in late to the party and misses the extra practice of 4 debates. They bomb because of that deficit. What makes us think Palin would do any better after missing 6 debates. I have a feeling that she is going to look wooden, rehearsed and out of sorts. Even Huntsman is looking coherent and smooth after a few goes at this. He still has bad ideas, but he is more confident in his stupidity.
