No one wants to keep these kids from an education but they should have to pay the out of state tuition, just like American kids who come from other places do.
Ah, this is depressing, I have no candidate and the one candidate that I don’t know if I can bring myself to vote for may get the nomination.
I despise Mitt and if he is the nominee, I don’t know if I can pull that lever. I suppose if I was drunk enough I could do it.
The ones I really want won’t win, Santorum or Cain. I like Palin but hate the will she/won’t she game she is playing.
If they are legal, then educate them. They are citizens. If not, send them and their parents home. Not our responsibility.
People say that but she is not playing she will/she won't...just saying she will let you know by the deadline...
Those people live here. We didn't invite them or bring them in. Neither did Perry. Neither did Bush or Anne Richards. They came on their own, over decades of time.
Their kids grew up here. They played sports with our kids. They attended the same schools. We didn't invite them or encourage them to come here. I'm a parent and my kids attend school with them.
So they reach high school age and want to attend college and better their lives. They're essentially Americans, this is the only place they know. You let them pay tuition just like any other resident of the state. Not out of state tuition. Because they live here and their parents pay state and local taxes, and property taxes. Why make them pay out of state tuition when they've been residents for 4-6-11 years? Why tell them they CAN'T attend college?
They comprise only 1% of college freshmen in Texas. The whole matter is overblown. Hardly any of them ever apply for college. The ones that can earn the grades, I say let them have a shot just like any other person who's grown up here.
I know I'll get blasted and insulted for this position. I still believe in it. Perry may go down in flames but I think he is right. He signed a bill with only 4 dissenting votes. So I'm not the only one who shares the position.
In State tuition is only granted to students who have attended Texas High School for minimum 3 years and have personally applied for citizenship. During their 3 years in HS, them and their illegal parents, like every other Texas citizen, paid State Sales tax and Local Shool tax, whereas out of state students have not paid a dime toward Texas schools.
Its unlikely any Mexican HS student came here on their own just to go the Texas HS for 3 years and then get a relatively small tuition break (the $10000 Mutt blabbed, exgerating of course, was for University of Texas, which is expensive and which damn few regular Texas students can get into because of grades). Mostly we are talking about smaller colleges and Jr. colleges, not UT or A&M.
Santorum did well in the debate. He could consolidate some of the vote from Cain and Gingrich and the governors of UT and NM if/when they drop out.
“no one wants to keep these kids from an education”
Well, if you mean an education in Mexico, that’s right. And, assuming that we won’t deport them, an education they pay for in the US might be OK.
But at a taxpayer-funded school? Forget it.
