Those people live here. We didn't invite them or bring them in. Neither did Perry. Neither did Bush or Anne Richards. They came on their own, over decades of time.
Their kids grew up here. They played sports with our kids. They attended the same schools. We didn't invite them or encourage them to come here. I'm a parent and my kids attend school with them.
So they reach high school age and want to attend college and better their lives. They're essentially Americans, this is the only place they know. You let them pay tuition just like any other resident of the state. Not out of state tuition. Because they live here and their parents pay state and local taxes, and property taxes. Why make them pay out of state tuition when they've been residents for 4-6-11 years? Why tell them they CAN'T attend college?
They comprise only 1% of college freshmen in Texas. The whole matter is overblown. Hardly any of them ever apply for college. The ones that can earn the grades, I say let them have a shot just like any other person who's grown up here.
I know I'll get blasted and insulted for this position. I still believe in it. Perry may go down in flames but I think he is right. He signed a bill with only 4 dissenting votes. So I'm not the only one who shares the position.
You're brave.
But then that is what us native Texans are known for. :-)
There are other states, 13 that had a similar program but that isn't the issue as Perry is the Gov of one that has this program.
Allow In-State Tuition for Undocumented Students
Then their parents should have considered it when they came here ILLEGALLY!
Based on your sc, I’m guessing Eastern European background/ancestry. My stepfather spent 18 months in a refugee camp working 16 hours for a bowl of pasta for 18 months for a CHANCE to come to America (Serbian) and to get away from Tito.
I don’t like line cutters because they spit on the sacrifice legal aliens make to come to America for a better life. And I don’t like illegals. I grew up in CA and I have seen how they have bankrupted and ruined the state (along with the libs).
They don’t want a better life, they are criminal invaders and need to go home. I grew up with them too, that doesn’t give them the right to get instate tuition when American don’t get the same privilege. That is unconstitutional.
>>I’m with Perry on this, and I’m a native Texan.<<
You are on the wrong forum. Free Republic is a conservative forum.
Weakness on illegal immigration is a liberal position.
“Why make them pay out of state tuition when they’ve been residents for 4-6-11 years? Why tell them they CAN’T attend college?”
Because they are ILLEGAL residents, that’s why. And LEGAL citizens from other states have to pay FULL tuition. Geez.....
Thanks for a correct post on this issue!
I am not without compassion for these kids who are here because their parents brought them when they were children.
I just feel there should not be even more subsidy to them that they have already received through all the other government services they have likely received before college.
It is not a matter of numbers but of principles. If they want help with tuition, let them serve in the military and earn citizenship.
I blame our government at all levels who have accommodated and subsidized illegals to the detriment of American born citizen children, a lot of who BTW can’t afford college either.
