In his first one-on-one national TV interview since kicking off his presidential campaign, Texas Gov. Rick Perry referred to Mitt Romney as Obama-lite and charged that the former Massachusetts governor is blurring lines between Republicans and Democrats.
But Perry told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Wednesday that his differences with Romney arent personal.
Oh, its business, he said. I just think its important for the people of America and certainly in a Republican primary to see the clear differences that the candidates have. We need to nominate someone who has a stark clear difference between the Republican nominee and President Obama. We dont need to nominate Obama-lite.
Perry did not answer a question from Hannity about his 2007 executive order requiring sixth-grade girls to receive a vaccine for the HPV virus, instead limiting his answer to another question Hannity asked in the same breath about his states policy of allowing undocumented immigrants to pay in-state tuition at Texas state colleges and universities.
This is a Texas issue, he said. This is an education issue, not an immigration issue.
Asked by Hannity why he used the term secession during a 2009 Austin tea party rally, Perry said the incident never happened.
I never used that term at all, as a matter of fact, Perry said.
As to why he had famously been reported as using the term, Perry said: I have no idea to be real honest with you. It was never a factual bit of reporting. It was shouted out by an individual at an event, at a tea party, actually. And I said, Listen, America is a great country, we have no reason to dissolve this union. I said, I get it why people are frustrated because theyre seeing Washington spending this massive amount of money, weve got a huge debt and people are really frustrated with what they see in Washington, D.C. I understand that, I didnt agree with it, but I understood it.
At the event in question, an April 15, 2009, rally in Austin, supporters yelled secede while Perry addressed the crowd, according to reports at the time.
Perry, asked about those sentiments immediately afterward, told reporters: I think there are a lot of different scenarios. Texas is a unique place. When we came into the union in 1845, one of issues is that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that. My hope is that America and Washington in particular pays attention. Weve got a great union, and theres absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, who knows what may come out of that?
Perrys not exactly right about this piece of Texas history, according to the Texas annexation document up on the Texas state library and archives website. Upon the Lone Star States entrance into the union, Congress, fearing the state would be too large, passed a law allowing Texas to subdivide itself into as many as five separate states. Neither the statehood agreement nor the act of Congress gives the state the authority to secede outright.
Perry has a big problem on immigration. His stance is not a conservative position. If the Tea Party backs him, they would look like phonies, wouldn’t they. My brother who likes Perry but even he said, he doesn’t want to vote for him just on that one issue alone. My neighbor told me she was not voting for Bush again. I don’t want to vote for him as well nor does my spouse. He maybe a nice guy but he has problems to overcome. It’s confusing to understand why Rush suggested for Perry to get in the race knowing that Perry has all of this baggage-in state tuition for illegals —was he setting up a weak person for Palin or does he know the country will not put a woman in the WH so we have to settle on a flawed so called conservative?? Sometimes, I dont think Rush is as conservative as me and or he knows it’s too hard to put a real conservative in the WH with the media we have in control. It will be an interesting election ride-we all will have to stay calm and to be patient while thinking these issues through.
If Palin were to get in, I am not worried that she cannot get the cash—people across the US, will donate to the Tea Party groups so they can run the Palin ads. Whoever shines as the strongest conservative, for reform, the money will pour in because citizens love this country and hate seeing it being transformed every day. I have lots of friends who are telling me that they are holding money back to see who the Tea Party will support or who they trust the most. I hope it comes down to that we win with a strong person vs. we do win with a just so person to get Obama out.
Do you really think TX can protect the border and your state can't protect your own state line? There isn't one oz. of difference except the states have no power to do much because of fed laws.
If they are paying state tuition in TX and out of state tuition in your state, don't you understand that would keep them in TX if it influence them.
You are REALLY stupid!
You posted that this is a 'Texas issue'. As if other states have no say. I merely was pointing out that if they stayed there you might have a point.
Why do you think you should have a say in what tuitions TX colleges charge?
It isn’t only about the in state tuition you dolt!
Well, that is what we were were discussing, fool!
So you changed the subject? Still, none of your business...and patroling the border is no more our responsibility than yours!
I think you have me confused with magna carta, they were discussing the in state tuition and I commented on something they said. My posts were about passing E verify, doing away with anchor babies and stop giving them government funded monies.
Correction: I commented on something you typed to magna carta, but my posts were about E verify, etc.
Lonestar...please put on your thinking cap. All the info is easily researchable. The former TX. Supreme Court judge had a stack of papers to reveal this info to us.The court case filed on this has survived a dismissal and it is the real deal. Illegal aliens can and do receive instate tuition rates OVER AND ABOVE their American student counterparts from other states. They can use their grant monies at private institutions. They are receiving full packages that cover the costs of a full semester by getting on these programs. It is most prevalent at the Community College level, namely Lone Star college system. It’s all a fact jack.
It’s called tools for communists. Read latest article on CASA de Maryland.A real wake-up call.
I think you scared them away! lol
Froends again.
