Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- Two American hikers imprisoned as spies in Iran for more than two years were released on bail Wednesday, Iranian and U.S. officials said.

The news of their release comes a day before Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is due to speak at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, both 29, were convicted last month of entering Iran illegally and spying for the United States, and each sentenced to eight years in prison.

They have not yet been seen leaving Evin Prison, but their attorney, Masoud Shafiee, went into the facility earlier in the day with paperwork to show that the $500,000 bail had been paid for each of them.

HISTORY - February 20, 2011 - Similar Story - (Iran releases 2 German journalists held for months) - :

“Whatever else Germany might’ve promised aside, a few things are clear so far:”

“The two German reporters spent 4 months in jail, paid 100K in total, which the Iranians authorities will share among themselves, while a grateful German Foreign Minister kissed the Iranian authorities’ butt & the Iranian State TV reported that the German reporters, after all, “deserved to have their punishment commuted & ENJOY ISLAMIC MERCY”!”

“I should really congratulate the Iranians!”

Despite their experiences, I assume they won’t be turning in their “Idiot Fellow Traveler” cards...

We train, infil and exfil our assets MUCH better than this. They’re not spies.

Not so sure if “kidnapped” is applicable. They may have inadvertently, through their own stupidity, illegally crossed the border into the terrorist state of Iran. If that is the case I would say that Iran has a lot tougher border policy then our own country.

Freed or ransomed? I’m thinking the latter.

And how long will it be before these monkeys get before cameras and microphones to thank Achmadinijad for his hospitality, justice, kindness and humane treatment? I hope they don’t forget to cast Iran’s prisons in a complimentary light to America’s prisons.

Scum.

Watch for the gay hiker bounce to completely obscure tomorrow’s “unexpected” unemployment numbers.

Happy days are here again!

Good point. Hadn't thought of that. Thank you, sir! Salutes.

When they get home and step in front of the microphone, someone should ask them if they were tortured. And when they say yes, ask if they still think America is the most evil country in the world. To which they probably will respond in the affirmative. But at least everyone will see how ridiculous they are.

Well I guess that 2007 honors diploma in PEACE and CONFLICT studies from Berkeley really came in handy!

Thought it would make them immune and above the fray! Kumbya anyone?

“Shane Bauer, a 2007 honors graduate in peace and conflict studies, has been working in North Africa and the Middle East, using his fluency in Arabic, the language he minored in at UC Berkeley.”

Thank you for the summary. I’m glad they are going to be safe. They will probably continue to be useful idiots, but who knows?

Two years is indeed a heavy price to pay. I suppose they might even "sugar coat" facts about the Iranian authorities. Of course we shall expect to see them on the media, unless there is some intervention about this.

I remember in the fifties and sixties, some America citizen finally getting out of a tough spot in a foreign country. Ariving back by air, with news crews awaiting. They would dramatically kiss the tarmac, as soon as they set foot on the most free country in the world. Love to see these two do this- I will not hold my breath.

Great news. I can’t imagine what a horrible ordeal it’s been for what was a simple, if misguided, weekend hike. Welcome home.

Watch. Next time they will ask for 5 million or more.

It sets a precedence.

If they work things right, they can pay back the $1 million by doing the talk show circuit, book release, etc.
