(Reuters) - Representative Phil Roe retired from his medical career to go to Congress, but on Tuesday he put his doctor skills to use to help save a man's life at a Charlotte, North Carolina airport.
The Tennessee Republican said he was drinking a cup of coffee and chatting with Representative Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport when he heard someone shouting for a doctor.
Roe ran over to a man lying on the floor.
"I couldn't feel a pulse," Roe told Reuters by telephone from Washington. "It looked like he was taking his last breaths."
Roe and another woman performed CPR, taking turns doing chest compressions on the man. The congressman said paramedics arrived within minutes and restarted the man's heart using an external defibrillator device.
The man was taken to a hospital, and a police officer called Roe later in Washington to report that it looked like the man was going to be okay.
Roe, who practiced as an obstetrician for 31 years, said the incident put things into perspective.
"I said a little prayer for that man and his family today," he said. "It just sort of focused me again that you don't get too worked up about what's going on."

awww the transparency.........but thank God he was there
A. Of COURSE he’s a Republican. A democrat would have stolen the guy’s wallet.
B. “Roe and another woman performed CPR...”
So, I guess Reuters thinks Roe is a woman.
This is not a criticism....just wondering....wasn’t there a defibrillator in the airport?

(Sorry for the duplicate post. I have no idea how that happened!)
If he knows how to do something useful, he obviously must be a Republican!
I have to assume there was but where is anybody's guess. Then you have to ask if there is anyone around that knows how to use it. You don't just open the box and start reading the instructions while the person is dying on the ground.
I'd rather have CPR performed on me than a kiosk worker or janitor zapping me with electricity......LOL!
If Roe was a Democrat, he’d have called a press conference over the man’s corpse claiming that Republican policies killed him.
The new defibrillators are automatic. You attach the leads to the patient’s chest and the machine does the rest.
I read this last night...indeed, it was not headline news...thank goodness he was there and knew exactly what to do. Good call, Congressman.
Meanwhile, previous headline news...someone faints at an 0bama rally and he asks for water........
Reminds me of that escalator commercial on the same topic. :-)
There’s a little more to using the AED than just turning it on. Training for it’s use is simple and most in house Emergency Response Teams have such training.
You should watch this:
“..wasnt there a defibrillator in the airport?”
The defib got rejected by TSA security so it’s stored on the unsecure side. They would have had to move the lifeless body back past security to save him!
When I read that text, I started asking myself how it could have been said better. Maybe, “Roe and a woman passerby...”
Chances are Roe isn’t current with his CPR/AED training, he was just responding as a medical doctor, using his previously obtained training.
The current training requires - prior to even touching the victim - the responder to tell one person to call 911 and another retrieve the nearest AED.
