Irvine - Closing arguments will resume today in the trial of 11 students accused of disrupting a speech at UC Irvine by the Israeli ambassador to the United States.

The students who interrupted the speech last year "meticulously" planned the disruption and one of the activists afterward boasted, "We pretty much shut them down," a prosecutor said Monday in arguing they should be found guilty of violating laws governing conduct at public meetings.

But defense attorneys countered in their closing arguments that just because the students planned to protest the meeting doesn't mean they are guilty of the misdemeanor charges they are facing for interrupting Michael Oren's speech on the Irvine campus on Feb. 8, 2010.

Actually, it does. That is a textbook example of joining a conspiracy and thereafter being liable for ALL acts taken by ANY member in furtherance of the conspiracy.

So just wow: If THAT is what the defense is reduced to here -- arguing that the law isn't the law -- then this looks like a lot of convictions coming.

“WHAT are these people doing here?!! “

Claiming to be victims of discrimination against muslims, of course. They serve no other useful purpose.

“WHAT are these people doing here?!!”

Perhaps, they are American Citizens.

“Actually, it does.”

No, actually it’s worse. If they conspired to commit a misdemeanor, they are not simply guilty of a misdemeanor, they are guilty of “conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor”.

Conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor is a felony.

Yup! Have I learned nothing from Tyne Daly’s sidekick character in “Magnum Force”? :)

If guilty, they will suddenly start singing like canaries. Just watch. :)

Doubt it. Deport 'em back to wherever their unpronounceable names come from.

There is no indication in the article that the accused are foreign students. If they were in fact foreign students, they would face the consequence of losing their student visa IF convicted and that is not mentioned as a possibility.

Therefore, these guys are simply US citizens exercising their First Amendment rights and the Constitution does not require that their voices reflect your views.

Most news organizations, even Fox, tend to be squishy and fearful about immigration issues, so I don't think you can assume anything from the fact that visa-yanking isn't mentioned. I'd bet money most of them are on student visas, especially considering that they're college age.

And in any case, there's no First Amendment right to deprive someone else of his First Amendment right. Or to disturb the peace, which was obviously the plan, intent, and effect here. If convicted—and it sounds bad—they should go to jail, or back to SandLand, as appropriate.

Silencing your opposition by hijacking an event and preventing the speaker from speaking is the antithesis of the First Ammendment. The Heckler's veto is not protected by the first ammendment, especially if it is an organized conspiracy to prevent speaking.
It's so reassuring that another "conservative" supports Marcuse's "Repressive Tolerance" approach to Free Speech that runs universities.

I never said that they should not have been tossed from the lecture hall. Instead, I have maintained that they should not have been arrested.
