Played by Ann Blythe (she of the magnificent smile and voice) in the movie.
Fourth film version---the production values were marvelous.
I do think Vic Damone was miscast---and looked silly in the Arab garb.
But when he sang "Stranger in Paradise"---magic.
Same when Ann Blyth (her real voice) sang Baubles, Bangles and Beads.
This version was on American Movie Classics the other night. There is absolutely nothing offensive about this movie.
Thank God you and others have come to my rescue! I thought I would have a heart attack when I started reading these comments.
Yes, all of the music was adapted from Borodin. When I was a kid I would listen to classical music stations and always wondered why they were playing music from “Kismet.”
I’m sorry the people involved in this production are not going to be allowed to perform this show because of stupid people. It’s not often revived in community/high school theatre and it needs to be.
Can you explain the term? I’m the one who loves your moniker, by the way. The very worst (in my humble opinion) of all The Soprano villians!
Vic Damone! A wonderful singer but probably a less than stellar actor.
In a private theatrical club that I belong to, when you walk up the wide staircase, you are greeted with a gorgeous portrait of Alfred Drake in his Kismet costume. I’m gonna salute it the next time I visit.
When hubby was a voice major in college, he was asked to perform the lead role in a local HS performance of Kismet, as the role was difficult to cast using the talent they had. He did a great job too.
And my family is related to Ann Blythe by marriage. Never knew she was in Kismet.
Mrs. Prince of Space
As I recall it makes the Arabs look rather foolish.
Yes, that’s where I saw it -— on Turner Classic Movies.
I caught a little bit of it. The only other role I’d ever seen Sebastian Cabot in was Mr French on TV.
Absolutely ridiculous. Words like ignorant and bigotted come to mind.
When I first saw the story, I thought the show was being pulled because it was “not properly respectful of muslims”. I thought CAIR was probably behind it. I bet we’ll never see films of shows like Kismet or The Desert Song again, or anything like those fun Maria Montez/Jon Hall movies.
OH MY GOD! That’s it - that’s the portrait I’m talking about. I’m really gob-smacked, Liz. Where the hell did you find that? I’m going to look at it on Friday night.
Ann also did a bang-up job in Mildred Pierce, remember?
And have to rub elbows with all the Limo Libs who attend them, but demand that our tax money pay for them? No thanks...
Glad you liked the post-—never know what you’ll find on the net.
Given the state of "culture" today, proudly so!
Beautiful Ann Blyth---professionally voice-trained. Starred with Mario Lanza
and in "Rosemarie" (2nd musical with Howard Keel). Loved her in "Mildred Pierce."
And I guess we’ll have to ban all of poor Rudolf Valentino’s movies.
As anyone knows, the ‘20s were the hayday of a naive kind of fascination with Gay Arabee!
