Georgia's pardons board rejected Tuesday a last-ditch plea for clemency from death row inmate Troy Davis despite high-profile support for his claim that he was wrongly convicted of killing a police officer in 1989.

The real crime is that 22 years have passed since the murder and we are still arguing about the execution.

Average time before was six months to a year. Less around the early 1900’s - like four months.

In today’s paper there were three sappy letters demanding that he was innocent, he didn’t get a fair trial and the execution is being rushed.
All three claim the original witness recanted their testimony, and even the judge said there wasn’t enough evidence to convict. (I never heard that before, anyone else hear that?)
I am thinking millions of dollars, more than twenty years and each time he is convicted would be enough evidence he is guilty.

If you were to try Charles Manson today, he would be acquitted for lack of evidence.

A lot changes in 20 years, but the fact remains he is a repeat violent felon, and a CONVICTED cop killer.

Davis’ supporters should take their case right to Obama. I have heard this story brought up on CNN, why not bring this up to Carney during the mid day press conference? Get Obama’s opinion on the record.

Execute him or not. Better punishment to let him rot in the hold for the rest of his life. Main thing is, put the whole thing to rest and let Al Sharpton, etal, shut up and get the hell out of Georgia.

This S.O.B. should have been killed 22 years ago. We have had to put up with more B.S. here in Savannah than most would tolerate due to his family’s wailings and some lawyers trying to “make a name” for themselves. I hope he enjoys his stay in Hell for killing one of our cops!

In the infamous “Double Indemnity” murder case (the one on which the book was loosely based) the time between the crime and execution was less than a year. In the Saco and Vanzetti case, one or the defense’s last ditch efforts to evade an all too well deserved fate was to claim that the seven years that had lapsed between the crime and execution consistituted cruel and unusual punishment! (A delay entirely attributable to dubious pettifogging and spurious claims by the defense.) Today, even in Texas, an execution less than seven years after the crime would be speedy.

I have followed this case and there are real problems with the evidenced used and coerced witness statements. There are real questions concerning his guilt. When you have former federal prosecutors and former very high DOJ officials in GOP administrations writing letters pm his behalf, that certainly lends enough credibility to warrant not carrying out a death sentence.

What is going to happen if this guy is executed and it turns out he is innocent?

THIS is why it costs so much for those on death row. Appeal after appeal, new trials, all paid for by the taxpayer. This needs to end. Execute them in a reasonable time and that cost comes down.

Every state needs to take a realistic stand on the death penalty and APPLY it. Society is only served by removing this scum, and Troy Davis IS scum.

You must be assuming the cops and prosecutors are more interested in seeking justice rather than just getting a conviction even if the accused didn’t commit the crime. You would be mistaken.

Obama: The courts, juries, judges, prosecutors, clerks, and (of course) police acted stupidly.
