Years ago, Bennett was asked to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" before a sports event.

He declined saying, "I don't sing war songs."

I remember that. But I thought it was a phony cover for the fact that he can’t sing that song.

That was at Yankee Stadium during the 1998 World Series. Bennett sang “America the Beautiful” because he complained “The Star-Spangled Banner” is a war song.
