Rat rumor casts ‘Net for mobster
By Howie Carr | Sunday, September 18, 2011 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

Everybody else uses cyberspace to circulate false rumors about their rivals, so it was probably only a matter of time until the underworld discovered the infinite possibilities of the Internet.

A rumor went around this week that one of the leading gangsters in what’s left of organized crime in New England had flipped, become a rat. First it was just a whisper, but then it appeared on the Internet, posted by some guy with the moniker “vinniegorgeous,” after a New York gangster.

“Oh boy here we go again. Ladies and Gentlemen I am sorry to report that yet another Mafia informant has come out of the woodwork in New England, though it has not hit the newsstands yet.”

Nicely done. He’s giving you the scoop, and the fact that it hasn’t appeared in the papers yet doesn’t mean it’s not true, it means that you’re getting the news first, ahead of all the squares.

Is this true? I don’t know. I called a guy who’s close to the alleged rat and he says he saw him last weekend.

“I don’t believe a word of it,” my friend said.

Here’s the genesis of the rumor. The guy hasn’t been seen for a couple of weeks. Now, in the old days, everyone would have jumped to the same conclusion: Somebody whacked him. You’d ask around and some wiseguy would take the stogie out of his mouth, shake his head slowly and rasp, “He’s gone to California.”

Gone to California. Or, as they said in “The Godfather,” “He sleeps with the fishes.”

Nowadays, though, if you go MIA, the wiseguys jump to a completely different conclusion. They figure you flipped and have vanished into the Witness Protection Program. You’re now a hardware store owner in Iowa.

So “vinniegorgeous” says that this guy (who I’m not naming because I can’t nail down the story, if indeed there is a story) “will now testify against” another recently indicted mobster.

Saying things like that is a good way to get somebody shot.

Of course rumors didn’t start with the Internet. Remember Zip Connolly, the corrupt FBI agent now doing 40 years in Florida on a murder rap? He got Frank Salemme shot by (anonymously) predicting a gang war on the front page of this newspaper. Two days later, Salemme’s rivals struck first, gunning him down in the parking lot of the Saugus IHOP.

But planting a newspaper story requires a middleman — a reporter. With the Internet, vinniegorgeous can just sit at home in front of his screen and create just as much havoc without talking to a single soul.

These rumors affect stock prices all the time on Wall Street. It’s why doctors just sealed their Internet files. It’s why you hear new companies advertising on the radio, offering to clean up what’s said about businesses online.

“You heard it hear (sic) first,” vinniegorgeous wraps up. “Like dominoes, everyone’s going to fall, never to be brought back up again, unless a young prodigy can stabilize a Family that can’t stabilize itself.”

A young prodigy? A messiah. Like, maybe, vinniegorgeous? Probably not. I figure, this was written either by somebody who doesn’t like the guy he’s accusing of being a rat, or a cop.

I’d bet on the hood, but I could be wrong.

Col. Hunt and Avi—and especially their loony callers—were punishing last week. I hope Howie is back tomorrow.

Howie isn't famous like Rush, so he can't get the wonderful Mark Steyn to be his guest host.

Steyn said (on Howie Carr), or at least inferred that his contract with Rush prohibits "outside" jobs in radio.

Rush dropped that guy in San Diego that went into syndication, and the guy in Cleveland that replaced Drudge's Sunday night show in many places as well.

Otherwise, he'd probably do it, since his NH broadcast location is part of the Howie Carr syndication.

Exactly.
SD guy Roger Hedgecock; and the other guy was actually from
Cincy not Cle—Bill Cunningham. The guy whose expression
“you’re a great American” has been used by Hannity

http://www.talk1200.com/pages/schedule.html?feed=389171&article=6833711
By co-incidence the Cincy Reds’ ballpark is called Great American Ballpark but I think it’s named after a company

I didn't know that. And, Mark is in NH, a short drive from Boston.

Yes that is it regarding Mark Styen, he cannot sub for Howie because of his arrangement with Rush.

All of Rush’s guest hosts either have their own single station shows, or just a guest host like Walter Williams, and Chris Matthews

Both Hannity and Hedcock stopped filling in as guest host when they went into syndication
But Styen may not want to do anyways because he has said in the past; that radio is not easy for him.

I would love for Howie to do a reoccurring segment with Styen, like Hugh Hewitt does weekly on Thursdays or a podcast like Ricochet.com does every month or so

Well a couple hours, I think he’s near Littleton or Lebanon or something. Actually he could do it from the “Upper Valley” studios on WNTK. I think that’s what Steyn does when be fills in for Rush.

Democrats aim their guns at turncoat Tim Cahill
By Howie Carr | Wednesday, September 21, 2011 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

Hey, Tim Cahill, did you forget the old saying, “No good deed goes unpunished?”

The guy goes out there last year and takes a bullet for the team — the Democrat team. He mounts a kamikaze run for governor that allows Deval Patrick to be re-elected with a landslide 49 percent of the vote, and this is the reward he gets?

He’s in a photo finish with a grand jury. His fellow Democrats on Beacon Hill want to indict him.

Where’s the gratitude here? Cahill was the best kind of straw candidate there is — he didn’t even know he was a straw. In late 2008, a couple of unemployed grifters from the McCain campaign blew into town looking for their next mark. They sold him on the preposterous idea he could be elected governor as an independent. Cahill thought he was taking down his enemy Deval, but in reality he was wrecking the Republican’s campaign.

And now Marsha Coakley has indicted his ex-chief of staff and the ex-Probation commissioner John O’Brien, whose wife and daughter both got jobs from Cahill (a fact you read first in this newspaper, by the way, two months before it appeared in the Globe).

So now Marsha’s minions are trying to put the squeeze on Timmy’s lackey, a guy named Scott Campbell. He’s 40. That tells you all you need to know about whether he’ll stand up under pressure. What was it the Mafia guy in New Jersey said about the current state of omerta, the code of silence?

“This ‘men of honor’ thing is all (expletive),” he told a younger protege. “It’s like a bakery with these guys. They take a number and wait in line to rat you out.”

It’s even worse in politics. But what’s more perplexing is that Campbell is charged with hiring O’Brien’s hack wife after O’Brien threw an $11,000 time for Cahill. Since when is this against the law?

Tim Cahill, last seen raking leaves outside his Quincy home, has got to be thinking, haven’t I been punished enough? He threw away the second-best job in state government, and where does he go from here? He used to own a coffee shop in Quincy – Handcuffs, I mean, Handshakes. His $107,000-a-year chief of staff at the Lottery was another Quincy deli owner named Al Grazioso.

What is it with all these treasurers since Bob Crane? Joe Malone, Shannon O’Brien, Tim Cahill — all ran for governor and lost. Now Steve Grossman is doing the same thing. There must be something in the water up there in that office.

And now Marsha Coakley has gotten religion. She blows an easy race she should have won, and so she decides to whip Tim Cahill like a rented mule. First she indicts that pipsqueak from Southie, Brian Wallace, for campaign-finance violations, and now she’s got Cahill in the cross hairs. What do they have in common? They’re out of office and they can’t fight back.

Time for a little Shakespeare, Timmy: “When sorrows come, they come not (as) single spies, but in battalions.”

Battalions of hacks.

Fri column ping. btw: Globe reports WEEI (WRKO sister station) host Glenn Ordway had his salary cut in half
due to ratings slump and supp. was told he had choice of
either salary cut (from $1 mil.) or losing job. A post
on a radio mailing list said there was a rumor that WEEI AM
850 would possibly switch to ESPN full time (they are now
on 93.7 also with their sports talk) and someone else told me maybe it would be ESPN in Spanish. No confirmation.

The first post said it was “not happy times at Entercom”,
as Sox may not even make playoffs and Celtics may not have a season...Will Howie escape from his “prison” on Guest St. in Brighton? (To be honest if he does I’m not sure if he’d get much more $$ at WXKS 1200 or WTKK 96.9...HC’s contract up in a yr)

OK

Deval Patrick resorts to sheer IDiocy on voter rules
By Howie Carr | Friday, September 23, 2011 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

You have to produce identification to rent a car.

Or if you want a library card.

Forget prescription drugs — you now need an ID for the high-octane over-the-counter cold medicines and cough syrups.

If you drive without an ID, the cops will handcuff you and tow away your car.

But by God, Gov. Deval Patrick, patron saint of illegal aliens, is putting his foot down again. All you illegal aliens, you don’t need no stinkin’ ID if you want to vote.

“I am not interested,” he said Wednesday, “and will not sign anything that makes it harder to vote.”

Imagine if you didn’t have to show an ID to get a beer at Fenway Park [map]. Change one word in Deval’s statement and see how ridiculous it sounds.

“I am not interested and will not sign anything that makes it harder to drink.”

God forbid the Democrats’ precious illegal aliens should be even asked a question about their eligibility at the polls.

Marsha Coakley, the attorney general, says that since a voter ID card costs $25, it’s an “improper hardship” for some illegals, I mean citizens.

Remember, this is the same Marsha Coakley who in 2009 famously said, “Technically, it is not illegal to be illegal in Massachusetts.”

I have a suggestion. How about we allow the illegals to use their EBT cards to buy the voter ID cards? Would that make our “new Americans” happy?

Of course, there’s another way we could change Deval’s mind.

Fulfill his dream of allowing illegals to get driver’s licenses. Then there would be no problem with producing a driver’s license at your local Third World precinct.

What exactly is it with these Democrat pols? I think they’re looking at the election results. Tuesday, they lost a House seat in Bristol County that includes at least one precinct in New Bedford.

Talk about a rotten borough — the 11th Bristol is a seat that has been filled in the recent past by such reprobate reps as Jailbird George Rogers and Mark Howland, the turbine mogul.

Of course, losing a seat here and there doesn’t mean the Legislature’s going Republican next year, but even Massachusetts voters seem to be awakening from their slumber. An empty bank account will do that to you every time.

This proposed voter ID bill is not about disenfranching black Americans.

This is about the Democrats’ new constituency — illegal aliens.

The sponsor of a proposed 2012 ballot question to require voter ID said that “My only interest is making sure that the person who shows up to vote and claims they are that person is indeed that person.”

How dare anyone engage in such ... hate speech!

Deval Patrick knows what that kind of talk is. It’s racism.

WHOA WHOA WHOA!!!!!!!!!!

‘EEI’s rapid fall from grace reminds me if the current Red Sox team’s death.

Ordway’s screwed...he pissed on everyone else for so long, no one’s going to throw him a bone.

BTW, Dale Armold is replacing Kathryn Tappen on NESN, great move for Dale. He must be getting a chuckle over ‘EEI’s collapse. I stopped listening completely when they replaced Dale.
