Once an obscure branch of study for economists and academics, Americas federal regulatory structure is now one of the hottest topics on the 2012 campaign trail with GOP presidential contenders regularly taking aim at the Obama administrations record on the issue, and the president himself defending that record in forums as varied as town halls and a joint session of Congress.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry, the national front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, decried the over-regulation of the last two years in a campaign appearance Friday before members of the Iowa Credit Union in Des Moines.
"It's the onerous regulatory climate that's killing jobs, and it's killing this economy, Perry said. That's why I believe the Obama administration should implement a six-month moratorium on all proposed regulations, starting today."
During his major address on job creation last week, President Obama emphasized to lawmakers that while the White House wants to streamline the regulatory process, and ease burdens on employers, there are limits to how far he will go to do that.
I reject the argument, the president said in his address to the joint session, that says for the economy to grow, we have to roll back protections that ban hidden fees by credit card companies, or rules that keep our kids from being exposed to mercury, or laws that prevent the health insurance industry from shortchanging patients.
Clearly, the issue will figure prominently in the presidential sweepstakes. In the meantime, an analysis by Fox News shows that as a business grows, and an employer hires more workers, that employer must comply with a growing list of federal regulations.
For example, a business with just one employee faces at least 10 federal regulations right off the bat, from predictable requirements like Social Security to more arcane Polygraph Protection Act.

The kernel..the nugget of it all is taxes, regulation, and immigration
The story of American jobs and labor is deeply intertwined with predatory Federal, state and local taxation and regulation....
South Koreans sleep soundly on their border with NORKS because of American Taxpayer dollars and the American GI.
Why cant Texans, New Mexicans, Arizonans and Californians?....BECAUSE
Illegal immigration is THE KEY to the perpetuation of the status quo in DC......
Predatory tax and regulatory policies-actions that basically serve to perpetuate and grow governments-leave what business is left in the country seeking disposable labor.
Illegal Labor is the Feds out for preserving the status quo regarding Taxes and Regulation. Interestingly, that is WHY the Feds encourage in-state tuition etc for illegals under-the-table -their presence providing disposable labor allows Federal, State and local regulatory and tax excess in the status quo to continue
Immigration is the ultimate litmus test as to the candidates in question commitment to meaningful regulatory and tax reform. If they are wishy-washy on the subject...they have no real intent to disturb the DC status quo...no matter how big their cowboy hat and six-gun.
Realleadership is that which will place Flyover Countrys interest ahead of the Feds....havent yet seen anything meaningful anywhere from anybody to indicate that might happen. We have just one more election cycle to make that happen via rule of law. Otherwise its the end of the run for America.
And as regulation grows, corruption follows.
Eliminate corporate taxes and overburdening regulations and you’ll clean up washington.
You deserve a big atta boy. Well said! Is the problem the regulations or the revolving door of regulators?
They regulate but only based upon what’s in it for them. That’s a fundamental concept of crony capitalism. Capitalism is no longer about risk / reward, it’s about buying government and pillaging taxpayers and socializing the losses. We just went through it with Goldman Sachs and AIG and GM.
Even Gov. Jerry Brown recently stated: “Not every human problem needs a law.”
Even Gov. Jerry Brown recently stated: “Not every human problem needs a law.”
Every year in my business I face more and more regulations from all levels of government that always come with a tangible fee of some sort and an implied threat of penalty if I am judged to be in non-compliance. Absolutely none of the regs make what I do for a living better in any way, but they do make it more expensive.
There is no greater evil abroad in the country today than runaway government.
I miss my freedom and am angry and saddened for the fate of future generations of Americans.
As opposed to a review of those nominated for being counterproductive? I could name dozens off the top of my head, starting with the application of TMDL regulations of non-point nitrate and silt.
Please, what a pathetic and cowardly half-measure. Go Rick, go... away.
How about TMDLs for temperature? Thos are killing us when the ambient air temperature exceeds 100 degrees F. Or nutrients when we have naturally phorphorous rich volcanic soils. Are we expected to mitigate for nature?
No, you are expected to disappear.
