Unemployment rates rose in a majority of states in August for a third straight month, further evidence that the depressed job market is widespread.

The Labor Department said Friday that unemployment rates increased in 26 states. They fell in 12 and remained unchanged in 12.

Nationwide, the economy added no new net jobs in August, and the unemployment rate stayed at 9.1 percent for the second straight month.

Many employers pulled back on hiring after the economy barely grew in the first half of the year. The economy added an average of just 39,500 jobs per month from May through August, down from an average of 178,500 jobs per month in the first four months of the year.

Reading through the article, there seems to be huge disparity among the individual states. The official unemployment rate is only 3.5% in North Dakota, yet it's 13.4& in Nevada.

These rising unemployment rates might help explain why Barry’s numbers are going back up. Free money!

North Dakota is in the midst of an oil boom which The Zero has been unable to stop (so far)..if we could approve off-shore drilling in VA and SC, it would create thousands of new jobs and billions in revenue.

If we truly unleashed all our off limits oil and NAT GAS land to responsible exploration and drilling, we’d have an economic turnaound in less than a year.

That said, it’ll never happen under the current ship of fools.

You’re correct, but it will give the next POTUS an excellent way to resuscitate the economy.

Yes, drilling in ND has been a boon for the state, despite Obama’s wishes otherwise.

Seriously, real thinking people know that nothing stimulates the economy better than unemployment compensation. Therefore the higher the unemployment rate, the better it is for EVERYONE.

If we could only get to 100% unemployment, we couldn't spend our money as fast as it gets stimulated. Of course there wouldn't be anyone in the neighborhood to electronically transfer the money, but that's why we have robots.

Since Obama is trying as hard as he can to get us to 100% unemployment, his popularity will no doubt shoot straight to the moon.
